Objective: Examine the incorporation of xenia throughout the various episodes of THE ODYSSEY. State whether xenia is being ignored or upheld by the character who you choose to analyze and make sure to provide a piece of textual evidence to support your claim.

He cut those comrades limb from limb, and then he supped- and like a mountain lion, left no shred: he ate flesh and innards, chews the bones down to the marrow." Polyphemus exhibits bad xenia because when Odysseus and his men go into Polyphemus' cave, Polyphemus eats Odysseus' men. Polyphemus does not welcome Odysseus and his men into his cave, but instead he eats them and is impolite to them.

On page 8, Telemachus says, "Dear guest, will you be vexed at what I say? This harping and this chant delight these men, for these goods come easily to them: they feed-but never need to recompense." This shows that he knows the suitors aren't very good hosts and he wants to make a better impression on Athena, who is disguised as a visitor. He shows good Xenia to her in the scene.

Circe exhibited mostly bad Xenia. She turned Odysseus's men into pigs, which does not show good Xenia. She drugged all of the men, and when they were vulnerable to attack, she took advantage. "When they had drunk, she struck them with her wand, then drove them off to pen them in her sites" (198). After they were drugged, she turned them into pigs, but they had the minds of humans.

Polyphemus did not show good Xenia towards Odysseus. When Odysseus and his men were in the cave, he first showed bad Xenia by eating some of the men. In the book it said, "And springing up, he stretched his hands and snatched two of my men at one and smashed them to the ground like pups: their brains gushed out and wet the earth." (Page 178) This is definitely not good Xenia because no good host would kill their guests. Another example of how Polyphemus did not show good Xenia is on page 178-179, "And when his meal was done, he drove out his plumb flocks: to leave the cave, he thrust aside the rock. But then, with ease, he slipped it back in place, as one might close with a quiver with its top." This is not a show of good Xenia because most hosts would not lock their guests in. Between eating the men, killing men, and locking them in the cave, Polyphemus did not show good Xenia.

Polyphemus showed bad Xenia in the 9th Book of The Odyssey by- upon arriving- attacking and eating his guests. However, this is understandable because Odysseus and his men had just barged into his cave, began eating his cheese, then asked for hospitality and a gift. As stated on page 178, "... springing up, he [Polyphemus] stretched his hands and snatched up two of my men at one and smashed them to the ground like pups: their brains gushed out and wet the earth. He cut those comrades limb from limb, and then he supped- and like a mountain lion, left no shred: he ate the flesh and innards, chewed the bones down to marrow." This caused Odysseus to "lift his hands to Zeus" and "weep at this obscenity- helpless."
