Selye says our bodies elicit specific reactions to stress, but layered over these specific response is a general response system known as the General Adaptation Syndrome. It responds the same way to multiple sources of stress such as a sickness or a tough day on the job. He breaks this down into three stages, the alarm stage, the resistance phase, and the exhaustion phase. The alarm stage begin the response, increased heart rate, etc. These changes remain the same in the resistance phase, then finally return to normal in the exhaustion phase. Exposure to long term stress can lead to "diseases of adaptation" such as kidney and heart disease. That is why it is important to handle stress accordingly and not let it build up overtime.

Forgetting to do an assignment and having to finish it the night before its due. My alarm stage would go off and i would have a mini freak out, and wonder how i'm going to complete the task at hand. During the resistance stage i'm full speed trying to finish. Finally, i either finish on time or finally give up and take the grade that comes.
