So far my personal statement isn't complete, and i need to send it off to my tutors to check it through and make sure it's perfect, but here's a snippet of what it looks like so far:

My main choice in universities is the University of Bristol, which i would like to do the Film & German course, so i have mentioned quite a bit towards the end of my statement about my interests in the german language.

My main choice in universities is the University of Bristol, which i would like to do the Film & German course, so i have mentioned quite a bit towards the end of my statement about my interests in the german language. 

It was quite a difficult piece to read, and i found myself having to reread the same paragraphs over and over again to make sure i actually understood what was being said, but it was really interesting to read. It has definitely made me think about the way we see the world a lot more, as i have never considered any of the things he talks about until i read it.

Here are some notes i made while reading 'Ways of seeing':

-seeing comes before words

-there is an always-present gap between words and seeing

-the way we see things is affected by what we know/what we believe

-we never look at one thing- we look at the relation between things and ourselves.

-dialogue is an attempt to explain how 'you see things' and an attempt to discover how other people 'see things'

-an image is a sight which has been recreated or reproduced. Every images embodies a way of seeing - yet, our perception or appreciation of an image depends also upon our own way of seeing.

-an image can outlast what is represented, it then shows how something/body had once looked.

-the camera isolated momentary appearances and in doing so destroyed the idea that images were timeless.

-'the uniqueness of every painting was once part of the uniqueness of the place where it resided. Sometimes the painting was transportable. But it couldn't be seen. in two places at the same times. When the camera reproduces a painting, it destroys the uniqueness of its image. As a result, its meaning changes. Or, more exactly, its meaning multiplies and fragments into many meanings.

-one might argue that all reproductions more or less distort, and that therefore the original painting is still in a sense unique.

-a unique existence is defined as an object whose value depends on its rarity. It's market price is said to be a reflection of its spiritual value.

-some pieces of art become famous because someone wants to buy it for a lot of money, Now the painting has acquired a new kind of impressiveness. Not because of what it shows, or the meaning of the image, but because of its market value.

-a film unfolds in time and a painting doesn't. In a film the way one image follows another constructs an argument which becomes irreversible. In a painting all its elements are there to be seen simultaneously. Paintings are ofter reproduced with words.

Then you turn the image and it says 'This is the last painting Van Gogh painted before he killed himself'

It is hard to define exactly how the words have changed the image but undoubtedly they have. The image now illustrates the sentence.

I know that by the end of this project i want to create a film following the life of someone suffering with insomnia, and using different camera shots, angles and effect to express that in my film.

I'm not sure i'll have enough time to create a full short film, as i also have to do some research for this project in order for it to be my best work possible, so i might just create a scene which would have eventually been included in the short film i wanted to create.

I need to talk to someone who works on the course at Maidstone Studios and ask more questions about it, so I know if I 100% want to choose D2D.

If not, I’m going to apply through UCAS for all the courses including Maidstone studios, but of course I know that that means I’m not guaranteed a place. 

It’s really frustrating that I can’t make up my mind but I think I will have to make a list of the positives and negatives of picking each course and really think about what I want to be spending the next 3/4 years doing.

I have already made a Stage 1 & 2 portfolio, and I also have my blog and Padlet which shows my professional practice, but I thought I would make another portfolio showcasing every bit of my work.

It was just me, the tutor, and a student and they walked me round into many of the rooms in the studios, and it gave me an opportunity to ask lots of questions.

My mind is definitely made up about going there, and I think it’s a shame that I didn’t go through D2D, as I won’t get the perks the they offer, but then again if I had, I wouldn’t have taken the risk and would have always been left wondering “what if…”, so in a way, I’m glad I went through UCAS because now I am solid on my choice.

There is amazing opportunities studying at Maidstone and if it means sacrificing 3 years of partying and having fun, for 3 years getting ahead in the field I want to go into and having a solid opportunity of work afterwards, that’s what I am going to do. Of course I will still have so much fun at Maidstone Studios but it’s not the ‘away experience’ I was looking for.

Overall I’m happy and confident in my choices, and I just need to talk to my tutors about signing up for student financing as it won’t let me select Maidstone Studios as an option.
