I am Maribel, from Spain.
I have been teaching English for 25 years more or less. I teach English at a School of Languages. Schools of Languages are state-run schools where modern languages are taught. At my school you can learn English, French, Italian and German.
The students that attend this kind of school are from all walks of life. They are from 16 on, which means that in the same classroom you can have teenagers, university students, housewives, lawyers .... The classrooms are arranged according to the students' level. They can get CEFR certificates for their level for A2, B1, B2 and C1.
If you want to learn about this kind of schools click here
Nowadays I'm not teaching. Iwork as a teacher advisor at the Department of Education in my region and I deal with teaching foreign languages and the internationalization of schools. That's why I have enroled this MOOC.

I think that teachers have to reconsider their role. I mean, we live in a changing society and we, as teachers, have to be open-minded and adjust to the new tools that are available.
I also think it is really important that we see ourselves a learners too and so,understand that we are allowed to fail.
The teacher has to be a companion rather than "know-all" person who does not share and interact, because society nowadays is cooperative and interactive.

Ok, I agree with the idea that it is almost impossible to arrange your classroom the same way as the one in Brussels: you need space, lots of technology and, of course, lost of money. Something we don't hev, I'm afraid. But we can always manage, can't we?
I used to teach English to adults. Not only adults, mind you. My classes were full of people from 16 on, and when I say that, I mean that I could have teenagers, doctors, firefighters and retired people in the same classroom at the same time. I used to arrange the desks in groups of 4 or 5 people (depeding on the space) and my favourite space was the one I "made" in a space outside the classroom itself. In the beginning it was planned as a kind of "waiting room". I arranged some tables and chairs, with English magazines, catalogues and so on. It ended up as a space where the students rehearsed their presentations, revised their homework and so on. It was not the perfect future scenario but it made the students feel comfortable and this is the main idea. Don't you agree?

Without any doubt both videos show greatexperiences They involve and motivate the students and they get really engaged in what they are doing. Nevertheless, both experiences make me feel sad. I mean, while they prove to be innovative, engaging and good for the students, since they are the ones designing their own learning, we, teachers have to deal with very strict curricula and external exams that are terribly out-of-date. However, we should insist and try new ways of engaging our students.

It is esential to get the local and national administration involved. Teachers do realize that a change is needed in education. Society moves faster than ever nowadays and there is an URGENT need for INNOVATION in EDUCATION (in capital letters). As far as the national education administration insist on imposing traditional exam policies and rigid curricula, teachers will have a diddicult path. So, from my point of view the "order of involvement" can be this: 1º-School management & teachers; 2º- students & families; 3º- regional & national governments.
Once we get this, we can move on.
It is also essential to identify trends in both society and education as they are a way of understanding what is happening in a wider world. We have to prioritize them so we can see how they are going to affect the future.

The experts' opinion although different in some details all share the same principle: Learning involves interaction.
No doubt, video, audio and images in general will have an important part in learning-teaching and the classroom will turn into social places where to interact with others and most importantly, learn from others.
Techology will have a key role and computers will be as common as notebooks.
The role of the teacher will be different. Teachers won't be just the person who tells the students what to do but they will be more mentors and coaches who will lead the way so that students can work on their own projects.
The students will be producers of their own learning, they'll work in teams ans will shares their findings with others.
Hopefully, this what we consider innovative nowdays, will be mainstream in a few years' time.
