The industrial revolution affected and changed the lives of families greatly. It affected them because woman and children both got lower wages. They all had to work from 12-14 hours, and were also not allowed sick days. If they were to take a sick day they would most likely not get paid or they would get fired. A lot of the families also had to live in tenements because they have recently moved to the cities. Despite the fact that they were treated very unfairly, products were produced more quickly. -Brianna Perez

Positive and negative affects on the family during the revolution. By Ken A. Barahona :/

Ok so lets start with the negative stuff since it helps to learn what did the worst for the people during the industrial revolution. So heres the negative: So most families began to spend much less time together. Men began to find work in factories and coal mines instead of their own shops or farms. This forced many of them to move to the city and leave their family in the country. Some families did move to the city to stay together. Even then, men usually worked so much they did not have much time for relaxing or family time after work. Many women and children also began working in coal mines and factories to support the family. This change lead to even less time together as a family. Children also lost out on their ability to play and be children while working in factories and coal mines. Working and being able to make money became much more important than time with the family during the Industrial Revolution. Now heres the positive side before the revolution: Families lived and worked together. Families typically ran farms and businesses (like shops) together where both parents had similar (sometimes equal) roles in running the business and children acted as workers. Children were also allowed a lot of freedom to play and be children, even though they worked with their families. Families spent a lot of time together because of this. Time with family and religion were often the most important things to families during this time. - Ken Barahona

The Industrial Revolution created a great deal of change in society.
One major change was the shift from work being done at home by
hand in cottage industries to work being done in factories. There
were harsh and unsafe working conditions in these early factories.
The machines posed a significant threat to workers’ lives. Even more
deadly was work performed in coal mines. Owners of mines and
factories had considerable control over the lives of laborers who
worked long hours for low pay. An average worker would work 14
hours a day, six days a week. Fearful of losing their jobs, workers
would typically not complain about the horrible conditions and low
pay. Owners realized that they could pay women and children less
than men. Child labor increased because it kept the costs of
production low and the profits high. As a result, the working class
lived in poverty, while the bosses who made up the middle class
grew wealthy.
-Shaanti Rodriguez
