Therefore if teachers are aware of the right moment, and can find the appropriate words, they can—acting as the situation demands—do something of lasting value and importance for the whole life of these children aged between nine and ten."

Q: How do I know the right moment and what kind of appropriate words this paragraph is trying to point out?

What is the sentence that touches you most?

“If we train children to make their own judgments too early, we expose them to forces of death instead of giving them forces of life. Only teachers whose natural authority awakens the belief that what they say and do is the right thing, and who in the eyes of the child become representatives of the world, will prepare their pupils to grow into really living human beings when, later on, they enter life. Such teachers prepare their pupils not by controlling their intellect or their capacity to form judgments but by setting the right example as living human beings. Life can evolve only with life. We make our students into proper citizens of the world by presenting the world to them in a human being—the teacher—not through abstract intellectual concepts.”

2.

Good morning, we appreciate that you've taken your time to be here with us today. We understand that this is your first parent-teacher meeting after enrolling your child to a Waldorf school. Rest assure what we do in this school will not just benefit your child but also you as parents.

I would like to start our meeting by saying that we understand how stressful it must be as a parent to become a good role model to their children, from the way you talk, the language you uses to the way you walk. It needs to be a certain manner for your child to see the good impressions that you're trying to show to them. Kudos to you for your efforts!

Your child had grown much compare from the first week he was with us 4 months ago. He had been actively participating in class and also outside of class especially during playtime. Although sometimes he just want to be outside and play, however, he was able to come back to class willingly once he knows it’s class time. This shows that he is more capable of making his own decisions. He is also more outspoken with his friends not just from the same grades but he also mingles well with other grades as well.

We also notice that he is being very observant not just towards his friends or teachers but to his surroundings as well. This can be towards the sound of a bird, the smell that's coming out of the kitchen or a growing flower. Rest assure that this is something good as he is slowly opening up himself and trying to find his own understanding to what he sees the world through his eyes.

I remember when he told me something interesting about how he could notice a wilting flower as he was walking to class. He mentioned that for the pass 2 weeks he had been watering the flower twice, in the morning when he was walking to class and when he was walking to the car. He notice that by watering the plant everyday, he could see change to the flower.

Because of this experience, we also notice he has been very positively thinking especially when it comes to making mistakes in school. He knows his ways of handling the problem (with friends and teachers) and comes out with solutions to his problems. In a Waldorf school, we see that "life can evolve with life". Sometimes the solutions that we're trying to find isn't what we have been thinking. Just like your son, he evolve the solutions to his problems through his surrounding be it with friends, teachers, parents or other living things. We can conclude that your son is slowing evolving to the person that he wants to become and that also shaped the way he thinks and see's life around him.

Therefore, we as adults in their life must aware of this crucial information and act in our best to be a good model of a human being that we wish the children will grow up to be. It is impossible to just tell them what they should do and wish they will do it. Only when we show them on how things should be done then they will slowly pick up the good habits and grow well and healthy.

Good afternoon parents, thank you for taking time out to meet with us today to discuss about your wonderful child.
We’ve had him present at school for almost 3 months and hence this has given us sometime to get to know your child.
What we can say about him is that he has lovely smiling eyes that would greet us each morning, he has strong steady limbs.
He is always the first person to run out into the garden during outdoor time and he is indeed in his element when he is in an open space.
He is very sociable and he participates in activities that the other children are playing.
And so it is wonderful to see him trying to find his way in school.
It is also great to see what his is trying to do.
As important as it is to “consider well the what it is also more important to consider the how”.
And here we find that maybe, (name) finds a little challenge in expressing his needs, wants and desire to make friends.
We must therefore as teachers, guidance and parents work together to help (name) to manifest his actions in a better way.

Prepare a tiny opening speech/opening thought for a parents-teacher meeting using the quotation shared before
"We must realized that, when we stand before a child who is an imitator, we must be mindful even of our thoughts."

Lets go in depth with this quote while looking at some of these real life scenarios.

For starters, have you ever noticed that when you're in a bad mood, or having an awful day; when you were asked to carry a baby, and the baby will cry? It's the other way round when you're in a serene and calm mood.

The second example is, have you ever notices a child will behaves the same way as the person he/she spends most of the time with? It can either be the movements, gestures, choices of word, intonation and ways of approaching a certain situation.

And the last example, have you notices when two/more adult is discussing about a child, that particular child sort of somehow know the adults are talking about them and starting to act out to distract the adult from discussing the matter further?

All of these examples have connection to the quote mentioned previously. Which is a great awareness towards everyone that plays important roles to growing up a child, to always be mindful towards the attitude, words and thoughts portrayed to the child.

Taking into first half of the quote, imitation skills from a child is implemented into Steiner ways of teaching especially towards language or second language subjects. Repetitive rhythm will create safe space for the children to learn as they already know the class' sequence and will be less pressured.

For second part of the quote, as mentioned previously, a great reminder to everyone that to have a whole developed child, people around the child plays important role. In order to achieve a whole hearted child, one must start from us as adult, be it with our physical appearance, nor as little as our thoughts.

The child had no other role model to follow except for the person they spent most of their time with. Yet, again.. always be mindful even with our thoughts.

Even quite idealistic thoughts are sometimes expressed there, but all of this represents only the what. The point is not to formulate abstract principles but to be able to apply them in a living way, with inner soul warmth.

Question 3:
If we train children to make their own judgments too early, we expose them to forces of death instead of giving them forces of life.

Lecture 5 - Reading for 6&7 Aug
1) What is the sentence that touches you most?

`Rather, it (anthroposophy) aims to guide the fundamental achievements of modern civilization toward a fruitful goal.’

`A very special inner feeling is engendered when teachers believe that their task is to assist in charming from the child what divine and spiritual beings have sent down from the spiritual world. This task is indeed something that can be brought to new life through anthroposophy.'

`Apart from looking after a child’s other physical needs, we must also ensure
that its limbs grow naturally, unconstricted, especially while it is still at the growing stage. Similarly, we must plant into a child’s soul only concepts, ideas, feelings, and will impulses that, because they are not fixed into sharp and final contours, are capable of further development. Rigid concepts would have the effect of fettering a child’s soul life instead of allowing it to evolve freely and flexibly. Only by avoiding rigidity can we hope that what we plant into a child’s heart will emerge during later life in the right way.’

`It is wonderful to see, for example, what happens when someone—perhaps the mother or another—is with the child when it learns to speak the vowels.

I am again touched by how practical anthroposophy can be, but to practice anthroposophy requires the involvement of our whole being, that is a lot of work to ‘do’ for educator.

“This is a deeply felt premise of the education that is to be based on anthroposophy. With this principle, we try to gain insight into the child’s development, month by month, even week by week, in such intimate ways that we become able to READ THE CURRICULUM AND ALL OUR EDUCATIONAL AIMS DIRECTLY FROM THE NATURE OF THE GROWING CHILD”.

Truly a big aim, but we should strive for it, from where we are now.

“A teacher and educator must not only deal with the business of teaching actual subjects to pupils; she or he must also bear the burden of responsibility for their pupils’ inner happiness and feeling of security right INTO THE LAST YEARS OF THEIR LIVES.”

The time element that etheric body bears, how education works into their life at this age range and how those instilled elements would be transmuted in later life, these are all important eye opener and reminders, on how can we work healthily with children.

Each child’s journey is unique. As Steiner educators, we strive to impact their journeys in ways that are both powerful and lifelong. How can we best connect children to their own natural and wondrous abilities? Our commitment is to the full development of human beings through Anthroposophy and through our own lifelong learning that enable us, as teachers, to step into this role together with you.

More important than any knowledge, is what the teachers provide, which is a pathway or method of discovering ideas and ideals; to recognise the development of children in specific stages; that equal importance is a paid to tacit, aesthetic, artistic and thinking knowledge; teaching our dear pupils to live in solidarity; fostering wonder and reverence for life and for the world.

We aim to ensure that our pupils enjoy school and learn in creative, independent and interdependent ways which results in favourable attitudes towards lifelong learning and fostering an environment fertile enough to spark their highest sense of purpose and wonder for the world around them. When we inspire wonder -- it is a gift, and a seed planted in them that will grow into adulthood. We believe that something from one’s earliest years loves on in one’s soul. So dear parents, by all of us joining our hands together, let us plant and nourish the seeds of wonder, joy, love, and gratitude through our teaching and through your support, then we are giving the child a gift for their future and in meeting their destiny.

To the child, they are morality personified, so that there is truly no need for them to moralize. Whatever they do will be considered right; whatever they refrain from doing will be considered wrong. Through those sympathies and antipathies, a right feeling for the dignity of human beings and for a proper involvement in life will develop. It does this in three ways in feeling, in will activity, and through the forming of judgments.

Ques: How can a teacher manage to detecting the inner soul needs of each child at the critical state since there are lots of children in the class?

Chapter 5
1. What is the sentence that touches you the most?

It is not the words that we speak to children that matter, but what we ourselves are-and above all what we are when dealing with our children. This is especially important during the period between ninth and tenth years, for it is during this time that the child's feels the underlying background out of which the teacher's words are spoken.

2. Is there a question you can find within yourself when you read through it?

Anthroposophy offers practical guidance in recognising the spirit as it manifests in outer, material processes. It wants to follow the spirit working in matter. In order to be able to do this-to follow the spirit in its creativity, it's effectiveness- anthroposophy must stand on firm ground and requires the involvement of whole human beings. We do not wish to be dogmatic.

3.Which part do you not understand?

In education, above all, anthroposophy does not wish to introduce revolutionary ideas, but seeks only to extend and supplement already existing achievements. To appreciate those, one need only draw attention to the contribution of the great educates of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Anyone with education at heart can feel only enthusiasm for their comprehensive ideas and powerful principles.

"Consider well the What, but consider more the How"
For new G1 parents:
Good morning and welcome to the Waldorf community education. I believe we as teachers and parents would love to give the best to our children. In such, we would love to hear thoughts from parents what are expected out of Waldorf education.
In Waldorf, what matters is truly observe life, to bear in mind the living human being who is capable of doing what needs to be done under given circumstances. We introduce writing before reading in an artistic way; working with colours not only with crayons but also with watercolours.
We allow the child to be active without in any way engaging the forces of intellectual but the will. From drawing and painting, we gradually lead the child's first will in writing towards a more intellectual understanding of what is written.

Our reports do not contain abstract remarks that must seem like mere empty phrases to the child. For, if something makes no sense, it is a mere phrase. As each child gradually grows up into life, the teachers write in their school reports what each pupil needs to know about him- or herself. Each report thus contains its own individual message, representing a kind of biography of the pupil’s life at school during the previous school year. Furthermore, we end our reports with a little verse, specially composed for each child, epitomizing the year’s progress.

2) Is there a question you can find within yourself when you read through the lecture?

How can I help my students make progress in their studies?

3) Which part you do not understand?

No.

(2) Waldorf Education & Anthroposophy - Lecture 5&6

1) What is the sentence that touches you most?

education is not a product of theories or abstract principles but grows out of the need to deal practically with human affairs.

2) Is there a question you can find within yourself when you read through the lecture?

If I’m not really understand then how do I teach children？

3) Which part you do not understand?

No

1. What is the sentence that touches you most?

We must plant into a child's soul only concepts, idea, feeling, and will impulses that because they are not fixed into sharp and final contours, are capable of further development. (pg.152)

Only by avoiding rigidity can we hope that what we plant into a child's heart will emerge during later life in the right way. (pg.152)

The Waldorf school is not meant to be an ideological school. It is meant to be a school where what we can gain through anthroposophy with living inwardness can flow into practical teaching methods and actual teaching skills. (pg.157)

When you are around a child, only behave in ways that child can safely imitate. (pg.161)

The essence of Waldorf education is to make education into an art-the art of the right treatment of children. A teacher must be an artist, for it is the teacher's task to deal in the right way with the forces that previously shaped the child's organism. (pg.164)

Anthroposophy never seeks to demonstrate a theory-this always tends toward intellectuality-but seeks to engage directly in the fullness of practical life. (pg.172)

2. Is there a question you can find within yourself when you read through the lecture?

Do I plant rigid concept to children? (pg.152)

Am I able to follow a child's whole soul spiritual configuration in detail? (pg.165)

Do I believe in the truth of this picture with the same earnestness that I wish to awaken in the child? (pg.169)

3. Which part you do not understand?

A quality corresponding to the soul being of the adult who is in the child's presence flows into the child's feeling through these vowels. On the other hand, everything that stimulates the child to perform its own movements in relation to the external world-such as finding to the right relationship to warmth or coldness-leads to the speaking of consonants. (pg.156)

How vowel and consonants build relationship between the children with the world?

Those who write mechanically no longer experience an echo of their writing. (pg.176)

What is the meaning by write mechanically?

We should not underestimate how such familiar things influence the whole of human life. Many person who, later in life, appear lacking in a sense of responsibility-lacking in loving devotion to the surrounding world-would have been helped if they had been taught writing in the right way.
