         <description><![CDATA[<p>Pre Lab Discussion: </p><p>Recrystallization is one way of isolating an ionic compound from a solution. If several ionic compounds are present in an aqueous solution, then a precipitation reaction may be performed to remove the unwanted ions. In this experiment, a known amount of NaCl will be dissolved in some water, and then recrystallized by boiling off the water. </p><p>&nbsp; </p><p>Purpose:&nbsp; You will learn to </p><p>To perform and master a recrystallization of an ionic compound </p><p>To write a procedure for a simple experiment </p><p>To calculate for percent error in an experiment </p><p>To understand how results affect percent error </p><p>To identify sources of error in experiments </p><p>&nbsp; </p><p>Materials: </p><p>NaCl. Use a mass of about 1-2 grams. </p><p>Several pieces of glassware </p><p>Heating plate </p><p>Electronic balance </p><p>Water. Use about 25 mL </p><br><p>Your materials list will be images added and organized in your Padlet or Mural.ly wall. Please make sure it is a complete list of the equipment and materials that you used. </p><p>&nbsp; </p><p>Procedure: </p><ul><li><p>Your group will need to write their own procedure for the experiment. </p></li><li><p>Use the lecture on error analysis as a guide. </p></li><li><p>Include a flow chart that mirrors each step in your procedure </p></li><li><p>Remember to include all the equipment that you use in your materials list </p></li></ul><p>&nbsp; </p><p>Data: </p><ul><li><p>Create a data table that will include all the masses and volumes that you have measured in the experiment. Make sure there is a data table for each trial. </p></li><li><p>Examples: mass of empty beaker, mass of NaCl before experiment, mass of NaCl after experiment, volume of water used, etc. </p></li><li>If you do more than 1 trial, please include the results for each trial. Use 1 table for each trial. </li></ul>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>A main reason as to why we lost salt is due to the violent bubbling when evaporating the water. Salt may have flown out through the opening of the beaker even with the watch glass on top of it.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p> Although we did not get a negative percentage, a logical explanation as to why other people might have is because they did not boil off all the water. As a result, the salt is still damp and contains water, making the mass heavier.</p>]]></description>

         <title>Procedure!</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>1. First we gathered all the materials which were the beaker, graduated cylinder, heating plate, watch glass, tongs, and the flask. We made sure they were clean, and we were ready to start. </p><p>2. We put water in the graduated cylinder.</p><p>3. Then we put salt in the flask and made sure it was 1-2 grams. We even measured the Beaker with the watch glass.</p><p>4. We dumped the water into the flask with the salt, and mixed it around a little.</p><p>5. Once it was mixed we put the salt water in the beaker, and we put the beaker on the heating plate.</p><p>6. We waited for about 15 minutes to make sure all the water was boiled out. </p><p>7. Once it was done we cooled it off.</p><p>8. Lastly, we measured the beaker and did the math to see if we lost or gained salt.</p>]]></description>
