Definition: Pre-Writing is the first step within the writing process. During this process the writer begins to come up with their topic and gather their ideas, information, and resources.

Personal Experience: In Elementary school, I always remember our teachers giving us a topic and idea then we were to begin our writing. As I got older, we were given a broad topic then we had to brainstorm our own ideas by gathering our own information, I always enjoyed this part of writing because I would widen my understanding of the specific topic.

Observation: In the past, I have observed within the classrooms teachers giving their students a topic then creating a web or graphic designer together of all the possible ideas they could write about regarding the topic.

Definition: Drafting is the second step within the writing process. Within this step, students are begin to put their words onto paper, create a cohesive text, and expand the text. This is the student's rough draft, they focus on writing down their ideas.

Personal Experience: Creating rough drafts were always difficult for me. I use to never like to create a rough draft because I wanted to just write my paper perfect as it would be a final. But over the years, I have grown to appreciate this step of creating a rough draft because I can completely focus on my ideas then receive feedback from my teachers.

Observation: Observing a classroom in the past, I have noticed the teacher does not put complete emphasis on the grammar while the students write but she wants the students to fully focus on writing down their ideas within their paper.

Definition: Revising is the third step within the writing process. During this step, the writer begins to fully focus on their content and improve their writing. It is the time to reflect on the feedback from the rough draft and make changes of clarity.

Personal Experience: Revising in my favorite step within the writing process. I want to receive the constructive feedback from teachers or peers and make the changes to better my writing. I remember all through high school, my language arts teacher would give us feedback by writing on our papers for us to go back and redo the grammar or specific ideas.

Observation: I have observed teachers putting students into groups to allow peer review. I think group editing is essential for students to work together and view other student's papers.

Definition: Editing is the fourth step within the writing process. Within this step, the writer proofreads and make any final changes. This step is important for the writer to polish the paper on the spelling and grammar to prepare for the final paper.

Personal Experience: Within the editing step, I think I have always had a difficult time. I do not do well within spelling and grammar. Throughout the years, I use to always have my mom or the writing lab to read over my paper regarding the grammar errors that I corrected to just allow another set of eyes to view and read my paper to make sure it flowed smoothly.

Observation: I have observed the teachers editing their student's papers by making marks of circling or underlying the grammatical errors for the students to realize and go back to edit them.

Definition: Publishing is the fifth and final step of the writing process. During the final step, the writer wraps up the paper and shares their final work with an audience.

Personal Experience: This final step is such an exciting feelings to be done with your paper but it could make me nervous if I had to present and read my paper. While I was at Meredith College, I had to write a research paper regarding my degree of Child Development. We had to share and present our topic with our class for the final grade. It is an amazing feeling or accomplishing and completing a full paper.

Observation: In many different classrooms, I have observed the teachers allowing their students to read aloud their papers to their peers. It is such a proud moment for the students to share what they have written in their paper regarding their topics.
