If you want to apply a new template.dotx, do this. 
1. select all, clear all formatting. 
2. attach to Normal.dotm template temporarily, 
3. Delete all style except orginal style in MS Word which cannot be deleted. 
4. attach to a new template.dotx. 
5. use the style
