The film “Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution” is a film that investigates the discrimination of the disabled community and their fight for civil rights. In many ways, film possesses a great ability to impact the people who watch them. Crip Camp is just one example of a film that contributes to social change in how it illuminates the stories of the disabled community and their experiences fighting against discrimination and injustice. This incredible story not only provides a voice for the disabled community and their experiences but also showcases the fierceness and strength of the people fighting during the disabled civil rights movement. The film does not hesitate in exposing the injustices disabled people face on a day-to-day basis. Due to this, the humanization of the disabled community is made clear. At the beginning of the film, a character who was a camper at Camp Jened states that they simply wish to be seen as a person. Through a variety of media, the disabled community has been represented in ways that are dehumanizing and discriminatory. Films like Crimp Camp are important for the reason that they break the dehumanizing narrative of disabled people and instead forces the audience to see them as human beings and members of society who should be equally considered as any other able-bodied person is considered. In this way, Crip Camp contributes to the battle for social change as it makes its audience aware of the injustices that occur every day.

Anthony Lucero’s “East Side Sushi” tells the story of Juana Martinez, A Mexican American woman who is an extraordinary chef. Not living to her full potential Juana finds herself working in a sushi restaurant and eventually wishing to become a sushi chef herself. Juana Martinez faces a series of set backs stemming from the internalized racism and sexism of her peers. Eventually, Juana Martinez proves herself and shatters the glass ceiling. Throughout her journey Juana experiences a multitude of emotions and undergoes a great deal of character development. Comparing Juana’s character from the beginning of the film to the very end, there is quite a drastic shift in the overall demenour and confidence of the character. This evolution that Juana experiences in the film is also expressed through the characters costume design. As I mentioned before, in the beginning of the film Juana’s character feels unfilled and this is expressed through the attire she wears in the first act of the film. Juana is often seen in casual clothing and is shown to be relatively messy and disorganzied. However, as we see her charatcre evolve, Juana’s clothing better expresses her character for who she is. A particular scene I found impactful was when Juana decided to wear her mother’s head band on her head in the final sushi chef competition. This simple gesture is not only a beautiful moment in how it expresses the bond between Juana and her mother but also Juana’s acceptance of who she is. It is because of this acceptance of who she is in this moment that she will succeed in her field regardless of her peers beliefs. Overall, Juana’s experiences lead her to the acceptance and fulfillment in herself she sout from the very beginning of the film. In the end, we see a beautiful and fulfilling completion of her evolution. A truly masterful work expressed through multiple areas of the film.

“Sorry to Bother You” is a film about telemarketer Cassius Green and his pursuits to achieving wealth and prosperity. In this pursuit, however, Cassius loses his morality as he becomes more and more successful, pushing away the people around him and becoming selfish. Eventually, Cassius understands the error of his ways but by then it is already too late. In this film, one of the main themes I found interesting was the conversations about the exploitation of minorities and underrepresented communities. The entire purpose of Cassius' pursuits is to gain wealth and prosperity because the opportunities he was being given were not able to allow him to live a suitable life. Being pushed into a corporation where he profits from the exploitation of others, places Cassius in a position of power he did not have before. Due to the corruption of this company, Cassius's behavior becomes reflective of the manipulation the company has been doing on him. This is represented through a variety of ways but the way in which I will be examining this is through the use of color. This film is filled with a variety of pallets and patterns but one particular color that stands out was white. In this film, white is used to often represent capitalism and success whereas the other colors are used to represent emotions and empathy. As we see Cassius' character progress through the film we slowly see him become engulfed in white implying that he is reaching his goal of success but at the cost of the absence of emotional integrity and empathy. His life loses the color that it was once filled with specifically in relation to his girlfriend whom, throughout the film, we see an abundance of color surrounding her. In the end, Cassius is once again surrounded by color with the exception of his clothes where we see small hints of white being worn under his clothing and peaking out, representing that he never truly has a resolution. Overall, the use of color in this film is brilliantly depicted and should be applauded.
