Sometimes the process of learning/acquisition or demonstration of knowledge is not that what expectation desire. This then involves the acceptance of that failure and for the individual to take active steps to reflect, identify and analyse why this has occurred. Thus, resilience is the ability to accept failure, but actively take steps to change the future outcome.

Resilience is the capacity to withstand adversity, to bounce back from bullying, for example. Perhaps to make lemonade from the lemons. One demonstrates resilience when able to take the knocks and adjust accordingly. Everyone can be resilient to a certain degree, assuming that the damage is superficial enough that foundations remain intact, and can be rebuilt upon. In such cases one can change, redirect and adapt - with all the potential to be better and stronger as a result. However, one might not be resilient "enough" if the attack is aggressive, incessant, simultaneously on multiple fronts. Damage can be integral to the core, to health and well-being. In such cases, what cannot bend any further, will break. We know that resilience can be tested...and proven to be a precious but finite quality in everyone.

When I see the word resilience I think of pushing through in the face of adversity. This can be applied at a large or a small scale. A large scale could be an illness in the family, a small scale recovering from a sports injury. Throughout the crisis of the past few months people have continued to push through. Continuing education, moving, quarantining and still trying to make the world a better place. On a personal note I believe I am a pretty resilient individual. Having being orphaned as a young adult has taught me a lot, and to some degree I know I am unable to empathize in ways I wish I could. When I see my spouse struggling with his feelings, having to be so far away from his family, when he hears his mom crying on the phone, and wishing he could do more to ease the larger impact they are suffering from this crisis. As a couple we need to be resilient, to stand strong for “todo la familia” and push through together. We are stronger together.

Resilience is adapting to challenging situations. The more challenges I encounter the more I realize that it is hard to be a resilient individual, but it is much easier to be a resilient team, that can support each other in facing challenges by sharing the strengths of each member and giving ourselves permission to lean on other people. Resilience is a powerful trait that is developed with a lot of experience and hard work. It is something we should appreciate in others, but not expect. We also have to be aware that some circumstances may not call for resilience on the part of individuals, but understanding by all.
