Ratliff uses an interesting observation that when we continue to listen to a particular artist over the entirety of their work, we listen for the long-term changes. For me this tends to follow the progression of a musician both as an artist and as a person, or how they evolve over the course of their life. There’s an interesting aspect of camaraderie between artists and their listeners or fans because there’s this type of reliance from both parties, where an artist usually hopes to please their fans because they like the work the artist has produced thus far while also maintaining that aura of mystery that keeps fans intrigued and amazed. Ratliff touches on an interesting subject when he talks about the dichotomy between producing music from an artist, Ratliff uses Mariah Carey as an example, with a sound so unique it almost acts as an artist’s trademark, and attempting to record or encapsulate that essence on cue so that listeners will have that sense of longevity through music. In today’s pop music, specifically Lady Gaga for example, an artist’s discography can be pinpointed to a particular “era” that their album is from. This is similar to how Blair Jackson color-codes the different “eras” of the Grateful Dead, but now with music videos and improved technology, an artist’s album or era can be referenced in regards to the its aesthetic rather than by dates or band members.
