A series of informative webinars that will provide an abundance of tips, advice, and information around the topic of apprenticeships. Each webinar lasts for 30 minutes and will take place on Zoom. Myth 1: Apprenticeships are for students who don’t get into uni.

This is false!

Apprenticeships are not a ‘back up’ or ‘fail safe’ for students who don’t achieve their Level 3 grades. Apprenticeships are simply a more hands-on approach to getting into an industry. They are a way for students to study towards a qualification while earning money doing the job they’re training for.

For example, a child who wants to be an accountant could study a degree in accountancy and start looking for a job when they finish university, or they could learn on the job and work towards an accountancy qualification on an apprenticeship. Both routes will lead to them becoming an accountant: one is more study-based, and one is more practical.

This is also false!

Both routes give students the skills and knowledge they need to be successful in their chosen careers and employers don’t value one route over another (unless the career requires a degree, like a vet or teacher). Many industries — art and design, sales, and construction, for example — favour industry experience over academic study, meaning students who have taken an apprenticeship or studied a degree with a year in industry tend to do better as they’ve already built up the experience they need.

In fact, the Sutton Trust found that the best apprentices can earn up to £52,000 more than graduates from non-elite universities over their lifetime!

Another false one!

You can study an apprenticeship or a degree at any point in your life so you can do one now then do the other later on.

There’s also the option to do both at the same time. Degree apprenticeships are exactly what they sound like: students can study for a degree and work in a related field at the same time, giving them the best of both worlds. This is only available in a limited number of industries though.

An apprenticeship might be the right path for your child if…

1. They want to earn while they learn

2. They prefer hands-on learning to writing essays or attending lectures

3. They want or need lots of experience on their CV

An apprenticeship might not be the right path for your child if…

1. They like their academic studies

2. There isn’t an apprenticeship route into the career of their choice

3. They want the ‘university experience’

Talk to the careers adviser at your child’s school for more advice.

You guessed it… another false one!

As an apprentice, you hit the ground running from day one, working on real projects. Remember, as an apprentice you’re an employee. It’s not like volunteering or doing an internship. You might be working with paying clients, treating patients on a nursing ward, or helping design new buildings, to name a few examples.

You’ll get support from your employer and will have a mentor or supervisor to guide you, so don’t worry, you won’t be expected to know everything from day one. You’ll get objectives set at the start of your apprenticeship so you know what you’ll be working towards, and this will be measured regularly. 

Finally, the money!! Once again it is false.

All apprentices are entitled to a minimum of £5.28 per hour. However, many companies pay more. There are plenty of level 3 apprenticeships around the £10,000 to £16,000 per annum level. The average salary of a degree apprentice in the UK is £22,500*. 

Apprenticeship wages will vary depending on each company and the sector you’re interested in. There are also different rates of pay depending on your age and what year of your apprenticeship you’re in.

Undergraduate Open Days - Durham University

1. Dress to impress

2. Get there early (Make sure you know where you are going)

3. Research the job. (Understand what you will be doing and how it benefits the company)

4. Research the company or university. Show them you are serious.

5. Practice the interview questions with someone at home or a friend. If you can, video the practise interview so you can see

6. Practice more than once, but don't try to memorise it!

7. Remember good manners and body language

8. Turn off your mobile phone.

9. Be ready to tell the interviewer about yourself (Your response to this should be tailored to the specific job and company you’re interviewing for, and you should know it by heart.)

10. Know why you’re interested in this position/university (Be specific, what excites you about working for this company or attending this university?)

11. If it is an online interview, then as above plus - test your technology, use headphones if necessary, position yourself just right in the screen, be ready earlier than arranged, prepare your space , remove any distractions, create a bullet point note sheet (it's ok to glance at them but don't stare at them) dress to impress and remember to smile.

   You can use examples to highlight your strengths, such as:

   Employers will want to get to know you

   Show what kind of personal qualities, interests and skills you have. For example, you could talk about:

   • cooking - to show you're organised and can follow instructions

   • travel - to show you're adventurous and flexible

   • team sports - to show you're a team player with good communication

Knowing what you could be asked and planning your answers can help to ease the stress of an interview. Here are some example questions:

• Why should we offer you a place?

How to prepare for a university interview

You can prepare by:

• sorting out your travel and accommodation arrangements

• finding out where the interview will take place

• if your interview is being held online: ensuring your laptop and webcam are all set up and working correctly

• thinking about why you've chosen this course, making notes from your application and reading through your personal statement

• planning questions to ask the university interviewer

• thoroughly researching the course and university

• ensuring you're up to date with current affairs relating to your subject

• carrying out a mock interview with a careers adviser or teacher to see how well you perform under pressure and to ensure you're adopting the right body language.

• Dress code: You're not being assessed on your appearance or the clothes you wear, so dress comfortably - Smart Casual - no jeans etc.

  If it's an audition for a drama or dance course, you may need to wear something that's still appropriate, but comfortable for moving around in.

You can use the STAR method to structure the examples you give to questions, especially in interviews. You can use it to highlight particular skills and qualities you have that the employer is looking for.

When using STAR, remember:

• you can use examples from work, home or volunteering

• keep examples short and to the point

• try to get your points across in a conversational way so as not to appear too rehearsed

• be prepared to answer follow-up questions about the examples you give

Example 1

Tell me about a time when you have shown leadership skills.

Situation - in my previous digital marketing job, the company wanted to get more people to sign up to a newsletter which was not receiving a lot of attention.

Task - my job was to find a way of getting more people to sign up.

Action - I organised a meeting with other important members of the marketing team to come up with creative ideas, and I led the social media campaign to generate interest in the revamped newsletter.

Result - over a period of 3 months, there was an 25% increase in sign-ups to the newsletter and the approach I took was used by the management team in other departments.

Example 2

Give me an example of when you faced a problem at work. How did you handle it?

Situation - I was working in a florist shop with the manager and we were arranging an order of flowers for 2 weddings. The manager, who had taken the order, had mixed up the customers’ addresses and the flowers were delivered to the wrong venues.

Task - I had to get the flowers to the right place and apologise to the customers.

Action - I told my boss that I would deal with the mistake, leaving her to take care of the shop. I spoke to both customers on the telephone to explain, and reassured them that we would put things right straight away. I drove to both venues, swapped the flowers in time and apologised in person. I gave both customers a voucher for a bouquet as compensation.

Result - the customers were grateful that we had acted quickly. Later on, they both came back to the shop to spend their vouchers and have since recommended us to their friends.

1.   Curveball questions are designed to throw you off guard, giving the interviewer an idea of how you might respond to stressful situations in the workplace or on your university course.

2. When answering this type of question, remain calm, take a moment to think, and relate your answer to the position/course you're interviewing for.

What you’ll be doing

Work alongside experienced engineers in depots across the UK and learn what goes into keeping thousands of miles of power lines and tracks running and fit for us. As part of our team, you’ll help shape national projects, embrace the latest technology and develop the skills you need to succeed.
