In chapter two, there was one particular situation in which I would have reacted differently than Ralph did. In chapter two, one of the little kids told Ralph that he saw a "beastie" in the dark, and that he was scared. The older boys then laughed at him, telling him that he was wrong and that there was no beast. The boy was then embarrassed, not to mention scared from before. Later in the chapter, the boy went missing during the forest fire, and he hasn't been seen throughout the novel since. If I were Ralph, and one of the younger boys came to me with a fear, I would not have laughed in his face. I would have been receptive to the younger boy's idea, even if I did think it was dumb. I would have told him that the older boys would take care of it, even if there was nothing to take care of. The boy was young and scared, and all he needed was some assurance that everything would be ok. After this the boy went missing in the woods during the fire. Who knows why he wondered off. He could have been looking for the beast that the older boys told him was dumb. Or maybe he did not like the way the older boys treated him. He went missing, and if the older boys had been nicer to him, and made him feel safe, maybe he would not have wondered off. As chief it is important to make everyone feel safe and important, and in this particular scenario, Ralph did none of these things. As chief I would always try to make everyone feel that they matter, and make everyone feel safe.
