T- Tell about the group

I will discuss the goals and objectives of the group to ensure they still feel like it will be the right fit for them. I will discuss the importance of confidentiality and ways to participate during our sessions.

A-Ask the teacher about their interest and commitment

I will ask if they have any questions about the group for me. I will ask what outcomes they want from this group counseling. Then, I will ask about the commitment they are willing to give the group.

P-Pick Members

When talking to each teacher, I will review my notes and pick the members I believe will benefit the most.

We will create rules and norms during our first group counseling session.

With this leadership style, I will help guide my client's conversations but allow their input. I will be participating with the group, and I want the group to know I am interested in them.

This leadership style will work best with my group because it allows them to express their concerns and emotions. Allowing me to help guide the conversations to ensure we stay on track will help better their counseling journey.

I will talk about confidentiality in our first session and let you know if one-on-one is more comfortable for this. I will explain the respect aspect of keeping this confident. I may have 2 or 3 teachers in the same school so that I will address them within a group; confidentiality is not guaranteed by expected. Next, we will discuss who we are to get to know everyone better. After, we will discuss goals; I would like to see which teachers have the same goals. Once we understand each others goals, norms can be put into place.

Stage 2 Working Together

We will work together as a group by having real conversations about the education system and how to better ourselves through the hardships that come with the job. As the counselor, it will be my job to navigate those conversations to create positive outcomes (for example, if the group is talking about how exhausted they are because of grading, meetings, and duties. I will be sure the conversations end with solutions on bettering ourselves so we are not as exhausted)

Stage 3 Ending the Group

At the end of the group, we will discuss what each member took away from the group and how they will utilize their new skills. I will encourage the teachers to stay in contact (if wanted) to have each other to lean on during challenging times. I will check in with all members via phone call/email to see how they are doing. A month later, I will send out a survey to see if the group was successful for each member.

Universal- not being alone with our struggles

Teachers need to have other people relate to them and their careers. Teaching is one of the most challenging careers people can only fully understand if they are in the profession. I

Catharsis- opportunity to express

Teachers must express their emotions, thoughts, and feelings to get things off their chests. It is important to give a safe space to have tough discussions about education.

Interpersonal learning- Sharing their struggles and relating to others

In this group, the teachers will hear many other perspectives that may help them in their own personal growth journey.

Counselors screen prospective group counseling/therapy participants. To the extent possible, counselors select members whose needs and goals are compatible with the group's goals and not be jeopardized by the group experience.

I must screen my clients to ensure they fit our group well. I need to be able to meet the needs and goals of all members, so if their goals do not align, they will not be a good fit.

A.9.b Protecting Clients

In a group setting, counselors take reasonable precautions to protect clients from physical, emotional, or psychological trauma. This commitment to client safety is a cornerstone of the group therapy process, providing a sense of security and confidence to both counselors and clients.

All members of the group need to be protected from trauma and must feel safe in the group.

Title 22, Rule §681.31 states

The use of specific methods, techniques, or modalities within professional counseling is limited to professional counselors appropriately trained and competent in the use of such methods, techniques, or modalities. Authorized counseling methods, techniques, and modalities may include, but are not restricted to, the following:

(2) group counseling, which uses interpersonal, cognitive, cognitive-behavioral, behavioral, psychodynamic, and effective methods and strategies to achieve mental, emotional, physical, social, moral, educational, spiritual, and career development and adjustment through the life span;
