Grendel encounters and ram and tries to intimidate it, but it doesn't budge. Grendel expresses anger towards the ram for its "natural urges" during spring time and this frustration sets Grendel apart from other natural beings.

After 12 long years at war with Hrothgar, he is more depressed and angry than ever. He could not communicate with his mother and went exploring the cave until he found a passageway towards aboveground. When he was young he was so alone that he pretended to have friends. 

Little by little, he'd go out in the world and leave his mother. She was so unlike him, never speaking, only watching. 

One morning he comes upon a calf and then finds himself trapped between two tree trunks. He calls out for his mother but she doesn't come.  The bull appears to protect the calf from Grendel. The bull attacks but Grendel manages to evade his hits. He eventually is able to escape the bull.

At this moment in time, Grendel theorizes that he is alone in this world (SOLIPSISM).

He comes upon a ruined hall and soon full-scale wars begin among the humans. 

Grendel continues to observe the humans from afar and feels relatively safe. He watched as humans continued to battle, year after year, and Hrothgar would gradually rise above the other men in power. 

Hrothgar's kingdom would grow and he would grow his fortune: amassing gold (just like the dragon).
