Write a letter or email to ʻUmi focusing on the theme you interpreted from his story and sharing how it relates to you.

Your letter needs to include both:

One paragraph or more discussing how this theme connects to your own life (think of previous experiences, your ʻohana, cultural or spiritual values, other lessons learned in school, etc.)

One paragraph or more discussing how this theme connects to the lāhui (think of Kuapapa Nui, possibilities for future Hawaiʻi, actions and solutions to problems in your school/neighborhood/community, etc.)

Aside from that, the personal stories and specific details are up to you. For full credit, your letter should also:

Restate your theme and evidence from the text

Demonstrate mindful use of tone and content — remember, you are writing not only to an aliʻi but to your kūpuna; treat this more like an email you might write to your poʻokula

Show a deep understanding of the theme that clearly conveys to your intended audience (ʻUmi) the connection you made to his moʻolelo

Write your letter in a Google Doc. When pau, come make a new post here on Padlet in your class column and write your topic in the subject line (like an email subject). Then paste the text from your Google Doc directly into the post section (where it says "Write something amazing!"). Finally, on the bottom, include your complete theme statement and submit before the end of class!

Dear ʻUmi-a-Līloa,

As I write this, the natural world around me is showing signs of winter. The sun is rising later in the day, the air is getting cooler, and in many places the abundance of summer has already faded. Winter is here!

I am not discouraged by this, though. It reminds me that death is part of the cycle of life. I am reminded of this also in the story of your death. When I read about how your people carefully hewed stones for your tomb and went to such great lengths to protect and honor you in death, it shows me that our people treated death, like life, with reverence and respect.

One way this relates to me is our ʻohana's practices with my papa's death. When we laid him to rest on Oʻahu, we showed respect by adorning his gravesite with lei kukui made from Molokai, so he could be reunited with the island where he was born.

A lāhui that shows respect for death promotes Kuapapa Nui because maintaining reverent connections with our ancestors helps citizens to live in peace, knowing their kūpuna are remembered and respected.

Mahalo nui for this manaʻo,

Kumu Maggie

The Hawaiians treated death, like life, with reverence and respect, going to great lengths to protect the bones of their dead.

Seeing how good of a leader you were it encourages me to be like you. I may not always be a good leader so I try to encourage my friends to also be a leader. For example when my friends make bad choices I try to be a good leader and fix it.

Dear ʻUmi-a-Līloa,

I think this connects to my personal life because I believe the same respect you give others you will get back. For example, when I respect my parents they give me respect back, Also if I want something they will buy because I respect them, but only if its true respect not just respect to get what I want. This is how respect connects to me.

Respect connects to Lāhui because I feel we need to use respect more. I say this because I know there are a lot of people with out familys or homes so when they ask people for food the people they ask will ignore them and not treat them with respect. For example, whenever I go out with my family I always see homless people asking for things and instead of people respecting them they ignore them. This is why I believe we need more respect in the lāhui.. This is also how respect connects to lāhui.

Mahalo,

     Elias Gragas

Respect creates a better leader and community.
