Romeo and Juliet

In the play, Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare, two young teens fall in love under many restrictions, which caused tremendous pressure on young Juliet, who made the bad decision to kill herself when it became too much to handle. It all started because Romeo is a Montague while Juliet is a Capulet, therefore meaning their families would never have even thought about approving their relationship, since the feud going on between the two families never seemed to come to an end. This caused Romeo and Juliet to keep their love a secret which only caused more problems. As Romeo was being forced to flee Verona, they tried to do everything they could to stay together. When Juliet came to the realization that Romeo killed himself because he couldn't live without her, she made a terrible mistake of also killing herself for the same reason. "Yea, noise Then I'll be brief. O happy dagger. This is thy sheath. There rust, and let me die," (Shakespeare 5.3.168-169). As you can see, the pressure that was building up for Juliet caused her to not even think twice about killing herself. She was too young to be in a serious relationship, let alone being married. She didn't need to be worrying about marrying someone she had just met less than two days before her death, at age 13. At a young age like that, a girl is not mentally or physically ready for a relationship or situation that she had put her self into. Therefore, the relationship pressure was the reason why her love for Romeo led to her own death, which had been a decision of her own.

Of Mice and Men

After reading the book Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, any reader can clearly see the pressure that was held on George due to his work situation and his friend Lennie, who tended to make many, big mistakes. George and Lennie were always best friends, but their friendship put a lot of stress on George since Lennie had the mind of a young kid, in the body of a grown man. This caused Lennie to get in a lot of trouble, and it was George's responsibility to make sure that Lennie doesn't do something that makes them have to run away and find a new job again. When Lennie accidentally killed a puppy and the wife of their friend Curley, George knew that Lennie wasn't going to make it out alive, and he couldn't have someone murder his best friend, even though, in a way, he felt that death was some how the best option for him. After everyone found out what Lennie had done, loads of pressure was thrown onto George, which caused him to make the insane decision to kill his best friend, instead of running away. "And George raised the gun and steadied it, and he brought the muzzle of it close to the back of Lennie's head. The hand shook violently, but his face set and his hand steadied. He pulled the trigger," (Steinbeck 106). As one may clearly see, George went through with his plan and killed his best friend, instead of figuring out another solution that benefited both of their lives. This is because George felt so pressured, to the point where he did something so awful to someone he loved and cared about so much. This clearly shows that the pressure from difficult situations can result in bad decisions.

In the book Night, by Elie Wiesel, the pressure that Elie was feeling due to the terrible conditions of the concentration camps, caused him to abandon his own religion and to feel anger and hate towards his god. During the Holocaust, Elie was arrested and taken away to the work camps, along with his father. He tried to find ways where his religion and beliefs could help him survive and stay safe during these terrible times, just as many other people did too. He found that his god was never there for him and his father, which caused him to have many doubts. He began to question his beliefs and soon he came to the realization that there was no way he could be saved from this terrible war, and that even his own god wasn't by his side, even though this is when he needed someone there for him the most. "For the first time, I felt anger rising within me. Why should I sanctify His name? The Almighty, the eternal and terrible Master of the Universe, chose to be silent. What was there to think about," (Wiesel 33). As someone hopefully may see, tragic events cause the worst amount and form of pressure that is put on a person. Elie was a young boy during this time and he always strongly believed that there was someone there for him, but when he know longer could feel that protection he once had felt, he chose to abandon everything he ever believed in. For people who are very religious, that is a big decision to make, and sometimes a very bad one too, but the pressure took over and Elie decided to make that decision on his own, whether it was good for him or not. He could have really used the confidence or hope that he once had gotten from believing in a god, but he made the decision to ignore that. In conclusion, pressure can really take over anyone's mind, like Elie's, and trick them into thinking that doing something that is not good, is really the best option, when it is not.
