Prompt #2 (Tragic Hero) -Khyree, Colby, Noah, Evan

Our argument is that Victor is the tragic hero because his obsession with finding the secrets of nature led to his downfall, and the suffering of those around him. Our supporting evidence from the text include his obsession, which led to the creation and violence of the monster. Victor's initial intentions were good, as he attempted to cheat death, however this led to a creation of death. As the novel develops, Victor changes his motive to finding and killing the creature after he realizes how destructive is, which leads to Victor's death. When Victor actually dies, the monster suffers as well because he realizes he will never have a companion, so he decides to die alone.

Victor is the tragic hero that is responsible for the hardships of the creature, which leads to the suffering of others. Victor's tragic flaw is that he wanted to play god, but after he did this, he neglects his own creation and only feels sorry for himself. Because the monster's creator does not accept him, he couldn't expect acceptance from other humans which led to his feelings of isolation. Additionally, Victor brought suffering upon both the creature and Elizabeth by not creating a companion for his creature. This made the creature feel even more alone which led him to seek revenge on Victor by killing his fiance.

Thesis: The mistreatment of the creature by Victor and society makes the creature inflict his suffering on others.
Evidence: The creature was brought into the world a kind and gentle being. He was not inherently cruel or evil. However, he turned hostile because society rejected him based on his appearance. The creature struggled to understand why he was not accepted by the humans because he read about all the horrible things humans did to each other. He wondered why he was so "wretched" when these humans have done evil things themselves. Being isolated and lonely ultimately led to the creature to becoming a tragic figure and a monster by inflicting revenge on Victor. The creature in the end turned into an evil being. He hurt murdered Victor's loved ones because all he wanted was to have a companion and be accepted by society.

Thesis: Victor and the monster act as foils to highlight the meaning of isolation and companionship.
Argument: Throughout Victor's life, he always had a companion and a sense of belonging. Unlike Victor, the monster was abandoned since day one, and is continuously neglected by society. The creature longed for a companion such as those that Victor had while Victor longed for separation from the rest of the world.

Victor serves as a foil to creature, illuminating the meaning of isolation and belonging in the novel as a whole.
The creature is rejected from society despite his intense longing for human acceptance and interaction. He is isolated against his will. Victor is welcomed into society but he isolates himself purposefully. At first it is to dedicate himself to his scientific work, but later on he isolates himself to protect his family from the creature. As a result of the creature being rejected by society, he discovers that the only way he will ever be happy and find acceptance is if there is another creature like himself.

Thesis: Victor and the Creature are foils for one another because of how they react to society and how society treats them during their time alone. Victor thrived during his period of isolation, while the creature's isolation leads to his loss of innocence from his experiences alone. Ignorance and knowledge also prove to affect them differently, since Victor wouldn't have created the creature if he didn't have the knowledge, and the creature wouldn't have found out about his monstrosity if he remained ignorant.
