Today during our discussion with all of the group members, we talked about the benefits of documentation. As a group we talked about the benefits of technology and how it makes it much easier for teachers to document the students work. One way that documentation is helpful is that it promotes parent involvement. Parents are able to see what their children are doing during the school day and then can ask their child when they get home can ask more specific questions about their school day. Parents can also document what their children are doing at home as well and this is helpful for the teachers to see what the child does at home. Overall we thought that documentation is very beneficial and technology has definitely made documentation much more accessible able to everybody.

Some of us found tying the string into knots and ending the stitch frustrating but other than that we got the hang of it pretty quickly. We all felt very successful at the end when we finished our pin pillows.

In our KWL chart we talked about the "Let Black Kids Just Be Kids" article by Robin Bernstein. We had some background knowledge about the stereotypes and racism that was present in entertainment during the 19th century. We learned that there a lot of false perceptions about black children and people overestimate their age by years and think they are less 'childlike'. We also learned the effects of "Uncle Tom's Cabin" and how it transformed childlike innocence into a racial issue.

Today we brainstormed ideas for our puppet show. We are thinking of talking about different families and their socioeconomic statuses. We want to have one puppet who's family doesn't have a lot of money and lives a smaller apartment, rather than a house. Our goal is to show that it doesn't matter where people live or what they wear, it's what's on the inside that matters. This book gave us a lot of ideas for different directions we could take our show in.

Today in class we came up with an idea for our puppet kit. As you can see in the photo above we have the idea to make our skit about a kid who doesn't want to bring his friends over to his house because his mom is never there. His parents are never home because they're always working so his grandmother is always home with him. The other kids make fun of him for his mom never being home. The kid will talk to his older sibling for help. Overall, our skit is supposed to show that families look different and how some kids' parents might not always be home while others are.

Today in class we started our puppets! We began by cutting out the stencils, leaving some extra room and tracing the stencils on the fabric. Some issues we ran into were some pens did not show up on the fabric. We were tempted to use sharpie but Riley reminded us that it would bleed through. A group member also drew on the wrong side on the fabric but caught their mistake early so it was ok. Thankfully a lot of extra fabric was provided. Even though it is just day one we are very optimistic about our puppets. T-GRASS is capable of anything!

T GRASS proved it's worth and continued to work hard despite the difficulties we faced. One thing we struggled with was cutting out the hands. It was hard to be precise with the scissors on the cloth because of how hard it was to cut through. None the less we pushed through. While we worked, we continued to discuss our plans for the performance and we are excited to show what we have in store. T-GRASS on top!

Today in class we started building an outline of our script. We have a general idea of what are puppet show is going to be about but today we started to break it down a little more. We are starting to figure things out like whose puppet is which character and the names of the puppets. We were able to able to form the main idea and then make bullet points off of our main idea with smaller details. A lot needs to be put into a script in order for there to be a good puppet show. We definitely still have a lot more to add but we have a good start and a general idea.

These are our main takeaways from chapter 1 of To Teach: The Journey, in Comics. We also talked about chapter 2. The chapters that we looked at are very important because they are the baseline for the whole book and laid out some helpful ideas and metaphors about teaching. We gathered that teaching is a difficult thing to navigate during your first year. In chapter 2 we also found that teaching often evolves with the children and the process is very important.

The pinning was a little difficult and confusing at first. We were scared to begin and it was a lot more pressure to sew on the actual puppet, versus just the pin cushion. We were all successful in our sewing efforts! Sewing across the top where all of the fabric met up was a little bit difficult but we figured out you really just had to send it across. We were so excited to flip the heads inside out and see the puppet start to come together!

Today in class we played our scripts and got and gave feedback. After this we had some time to make changes to our script. The biggest thing that we changed was our intros. We added them in after each characters first line and are planning to pan to each character when they say it. This way their introductions are more natural. We also added something different about each character to make them more complex. It was helpful to get notes from the class about what was working and what was not. We are happy they liked the song!

To start Tuesday's class, we commented on two of our group mates discussion posts and then had a conversation on what we commented on. Some highlights of our discussion were the exploration into curiosity in children and the comparison of Vivian Paley to Jane Goodall. T-GRASS is ELITE when it comes to critical thinking!!

Today in class we continued our puppet construction. As shown in the photo above we traced and cut out our mouthpieces on foam and cardboard and then hot glued them together. We also cut out the skull and put that in our puppet as well. The puppets are starting to come together and are almost done as we just need to add arms, eyes, hair, clothes, and any other accessories.

We usually have conversations like this while constructing our puppets and it allows us to bond and learn more about each other! :)

Our puppets finally have clothes! We were able to make outfits out of cloth materials, old clothes, or clothes we purchased at the store. We had a lot of fun creating and picking out our outfits. We did our best to pick clothes that matched the personality of our puppets. We had some difficulties getting the yarn hair to stay on with the glue gun, but with some patience, we figured it out.

Today we filmed our final puppet show! It took a lot of trial and error to get everything right. It was difficult to figure out what our backdrop would be and how we would set it up properly. It was hard to fit everything in the frame and also keep our bodies out of sight and behind the curtain. Some takes we had to do many times because we could not stop laughing. It was enjoyable filming with everyone! T-Grass finally gets it done!!
