My field of research is into belonging within the context of a boarding school in relation to boarding status.

I will use mixed methods, interviews and questionnaires to gather data. Update, not sure now! Maybe just a survey?? 🤷🏼‍♂️ My current question is “The Impact of Boarding Status on Students’ Sense of Belonging: A Comparative Study of Day, Day in Boarding, and Full Boarders in Elite UK Schools”

The number of families electing to home educate is increasing yearly and more and more people seem unhappy with the school system

2. More people can now work from home or work with more flexible hours (COVID seemed to have been a strong catalyst for this)

3. Not enough opportunity for play in UK schools (?)

4. Lots of evidence online of parents asking ‘where do we start? How do we home educate?’ in Facebook/support groups and online, suggesting they are unsure of how to structure their children’s learning

Mixed methods using:

County-wise survey

Questionnaires

Video observation

From the little reading I have done so far I can see that children with low-SES status tend to start school with poorer numeracy skills than their peers and this gap only widens throughout formal schooling. I want to find out how this gap could be approached and narrowed by seeing what successful school/schools are doing to support their low-SES children to achieve well/above the national average in SATS.

My research design will likely be a case study or several interviews.

My topic will be on the Mathematics California Subject Examination Test (CSET) which tests mathematical content knowledge prior to teaching certification. I don't think it's an appropriate exam for prospective teachers and discourages some potentially great teachers from getting a certification, so I am going to make a case for a different exam style that focuses less on multiple choice and more on constructed response, and is a better representation if the test takers know the topic enough to teach it.

I plan on having university professors and/or high school teachers in mathematics take the current CSET exam (practice exams are available for study purposes that mimic the real exams) and my proposed exam side by side and tell me their thoughts on both, especially focusing on whether or not each exam seems fit for a potential teacher while also staying true to content knowledge and ability to do mathematics.
