When a septic system functions properly, the wastewater drains into a soil bed that in turn cleanses the water through its natural filtering action. Sometimes, conditions in the septic system shift so that water can longer drain through or reach the soil, resulting in sewage backing up in pipes or percolating through the topsoil. 

This can occur when the underground drainfield soil becomes too saturated, unable to soak in additional wastewater from the septic tank. Causes include abnormally wet weather, which refreshes groundwater to the extent that it saturates the septic drainfield.
