Andrew Jackson was born on March 15th, 1767 on what would become the border of North and South Carolina, in an area known as the Waxhaws, named after the former local tribe of Native Americans. Early in life, Jackson received little education and started working in a saddlemaker's shop. Later, he taught school and studied law in Salisbury, North Carolina. On the frontier, Jackson became successful in law, and by 1788, he was appointed prosecutor of the Western District of North Carolina, later to become Tennessee. In 1798, he was elected to the Tennessee Supreme Court. In 1803, built a home and opened a general store in Gallatin, Tennessee. In 1804, Jackson acquired a 640 acre plantation called the Hermitage, near Nashville. Eventually, Jackson expanded the property to 1,050 acres .While the plantation relied on slave labor, Jackson's standards were somewhat high for slave owners at the time, giving them adequate cabins to live in, along with guns, knives and fishing poles to obtain more food than given. Jackson also allowed female slaves to have children. Shortly after, Jackson started his long and esteemed military career (explained on the next blurb) before serving time as a Senator, and then president from 1829 to 1837. Jackson died on June 8th, 1845.Jackson was married to Rachel Donelson, who died just a few days after Jackson was elected president in 1829. Because of this, she never served as First Lady, her niece Emily Donelson served the role from 1829 to 1836, when she died at the age of 29 from illness, suspected to be tuberculosis.

During the War of 1812, Jackson commanded a group of soldiers, including the Tennessee militia against the Red Stick tribe, who were attacking white settlements. Famed Americans Sam Houston and David (Davy) Crockett were under Jackson's command at this time. Jackson's most famous military victory was the Battle of New Orleans on January 8th, 1815, where his 5,000 troops fought back 7,500 British soldiers. By the end of the battle, the British suffered 291 deaths, 1,262 wounded, and 484 captured or missing. Jackson's forces only suffered 13 deaths, 39 wounded, and 19 missing. From this battle, Jackson earned his nickname of "Old Hickory" as a salute to his toughness in battle.

Lasting from 1820 to 1845, the Jackson Era brought the first steps of major domestic growth into the United States. With the construction of the Erie Canal, the United States made its first steps westward. The initial groundwork for the Industrial Revolution was evident, as northern cities saw their populations increase, and the south cemented its role in agricultural production. At this time, Jackson also spearheaded a new form of democracy, dubbed Jacksonian Democracy.

Jackson's Accomplishments in the Presidency

As president, Jackson essentially founded the modern Democratic party, was the only president to fully pay off the national debt, although the Panic of 1837, which lasted until 1844 weakened this effect. In 1832, Jackson dismantled the Second Bank of the United States, the US's second federally controlled bank, which would not be replaced until the Federal Reserve in 1913. Through Democracy, Jackson strengthened the power of the presidency. While not a true accomplishment, Jackson initiated the Indian Removal Act, which forced Native American tribes of the southeast to relocate west of the Mississippi River. In 1830, Jackson negotiated shipping and trading rights with the British West Indies.
