I was surprised by a few of the statements made by Barb. It was shocking to find out that she lived away from her father, and that she lost her mother so young. It surprised me to realize how little I know about someone I feel so close to. Barg has been through a lot and her strength is motivational for me. She has always assured me that I can do anything that I set my mind to and she has pushed me to the level that I want to be.
Through my interview I realized her ability to make it through such a hard beginning makes me more appreciative of the love that she shows me. She is very inspirational and has been a great leader for us girls in the family.
Throughout the reminiscing process, I used clear and to the point questions to receive the best answers from Barb. She was very honest and did not hold back on how she responded to my questions. It made it very easy to listen to her and know that she had passion behind what she was saying and all that she had experienced. My connection with her only got strong because of these conversations.
To me choosing these were a little difficult, because at first I was unsure how she was going to respond, but after listening to her, I knew that the questions were the best for her. Everything within the conversation was very open and felt natural between the both of us. I know that these questions can be very personal and hard to talk about, but because of my choice to talk about them with her, I feel the connection is stronger and I understand more now about my family.
My five words from the beginning were knowledgeable, decrepit, sad, liability, and lonely. I understood a little bit about Barb’s family history, but from this conversation, I have gained a lot more insight into what has happened throughout her life, and how she has become the woman she is. I still agree with the words chosen, but they have more context and meaning behind them, which is more personal now. I can draw the connections between these words and the emotions Barb feels from her more traumatic events.
Any experience that I gain from interacting with and treating patients will be a tremendous value to me. The perspectives and insight gained from talking with multiple people, allow me to value how people feel and what they have been through. It may not always be easy, but everyone has a story that needs to be heard and understood. This allows for a greater connection between me and them when I potentially take care of them. Nursing is not always about just treating a patient and moving on to the next, sometimes it is important to sit down and connect with a patient that needs care more than just on a physical level. The amount of joy and happiness that is gained from both sides is immeasurable and I hope to be able to be a great example of what nursing should be like.

Nana,
Thank you so much for your time this semester as I gathered information about your life story. I sincerely appreciate not only your willingness to take part in this project but also your eagerness to share what an incredible life you lived. I loved learning more about how you met Grandpa and what your relationship was like. I feel like I learned about a new side of you both that I didn't know existed. I love spending time with you and I am so glad this project gave me more reasons to do so. I was very surprised to learn that you and your siblings didn't live with your father after your mother passed away, this made me even more impressed with how you raised 5 children without being able to ask your mom any questions. You have taught me what it looks like to age gracefully and live with courage. You inspire me every day to care for other people like you care for us and all of the children you worked with at the orphanage. Your passion and kindness are something the world could use more of.
Thank you again for your time and story, I love you endlessly.
Sam
