Foreword.

The following pages were found in a shabby pocket book, very much sodden and discoloured by salt water, tucked away between the crevices of a rock in —Bay.

Their owner has never been traced, and the most diligent enquiries have failed to discover his identity. Either the wretched man drowned himself near the spot where he hid his pocket book, and his body has been lost at sea; or he is still wandering about the world trying to forget himself and his tragedy.

Some of the pages of his story were so damaged by exposure as to render them completely illegible; thus there are many gaps, and much of it seems without sequence, including the abrupt and unsatisfactory termination.

I have placed three dots between sentences when words or lines were undecipherable. Whether the wild improbabilities of the story are true, or whether the whole is but the hysterical product of a diseased mind, we shall never know. My sole reason for publishing these pages is to satisfy the entreaties of many friends who have been interested in my discovery.

Signed.

Désirée’s Baby, is a story of a woman in distress after having a healthy young child her husband disowns her claiming the babies dark color is her fault. The story takes place in 1893, I believe slavery was still legal and racism having a dark skin color wasn't necessarily good. Although the child had a dark skin color it didn't come from the mother but the gen was from the father (her Husband). The husband refuses to believe that he had a dark skin color, although one of his parents did have a dark skin color. This left Désiréenin complete sorrow, and shock that her husband throw her out because of their child's color. This later on lead her into complete depression that she committed suicide with her child. "Kate Chopin." Books & Literature Classics. N.p., n.d. Web. 25 May 2017.

Harrison Bergeron, is a story that creates a gothic scene and mode to the story, the meaning and the history of what has happened was cruel and scary. Not only was it gothic it had a part where love was involved when the two characters (parents) watch the Tv to see their son killed. The worst part is that they forgot they had a son, but still managed to shed a tear. I believe that this story creates a gothic theme with the message behind it and also has a theme of sadness and sorrow.

A cask of Amontillado is story that is set in a old castle. The story begins with revenge on a friend who made fun of the killer's name. He leads the old friend into the Carlie and into the cellar underneath the castle. The friend finally decided it was too dangerous, so he wants to leave. But the killer suddenly kills the friend. This is considered a gothic element in this story, the castle is the place it takes place and it also includes secret rooms. Poe, Edgar Allan, 1809-1849. The Cask of Amontillado.

The Raven is good example of a supernatural or inexplicable story this is because of the Raven and how each question it was asked it would answer with nevermore.

The tell tale heart uses a lot of gothic vocabulary for instance; “-I made up my mind to take the life of the old man, and thus rid myself of the eye forever.” This story talks about who one person kills a man because of their eye, later leading the killer into a subconscious and revealing to the police that he was the killer. The story uses a lot of gothic vocabulary because it gives the story more contrast and describes the story which makes it clear. Poe, E.A. (1903). Was it, I asked myself, a ray from the moon penetrating some aperture in the blind? No; moonlight was still, and this stirred; while I gazed, it glided up to the ceiling and quivered over my head. I can now conjecture readily that this streak of light was, in all likelihood, a gleam from a lantern, carried by some one across the lawn: but then, prepared as my mind was for horror, shaken as my nerves were by agitation, I thought the swift-darting beam was a herald of some coming vision from another world. My heart beat thick, my head grew hot; a sound filled my ears, which I deemed the rushing of wings: something seemed near me; I was oppressed, suffocated: endurance broke down—I uttered a wild, involuntary cry—I rushed to the door and shook the lock in a desperate effort.
