People wanted these actions to stop, in fear that god would no longer bless America. So what did they do? They pointed a finger at Alcohol and started the Temperance movement. More specifically, the mentally ill. She noticed that people would throw them in jail because of their behavior, and when they were in jail, they were beaten and mistreated because of their illness. They would be put in cages like dogs, or in rooms only 14 inches wide. This challenge is society as we know it. When Dorothea began to speak out against the inhumane ways prisoners were being kept, the counter argument to all people, was the fact that they were prisoners, and they deserved to be in there. This was a common thought that acted as common ¨corner¨ to go to when debating this. It was due to Dorothea, however, that the change was eventually made, and the mindset of the mentally handicapped has changed.
