In the past many chose to get married on whims at very young ages especially when the man they were with was going to war because they were desperate to marry as they were in love and would worry about the rest later. Choosing to elope or have large ceremonies depending on your situation, the past was the most influential time to become married or ‘get hitched’, with Canadians going to war and romance being at its considerable peak, the 1940s

The Catholic church enforced the ideals that marriage was lifelong and divorce was not an option, it was a 'bond until death' that was considered to hold the presence of God. The Protestant church considered divorce as an option and believed that marriage was a blessing from God. Canadians often use churches, and have been using them for as long as we can remember, to hold their wedding ceremonies. T`his varies due to personal preference, belief, religion etc.

The legalization of same-sex marriages was a major stepping stone in Canadian history, 30 years ago the suggestion of a man marrying another man or a woman marrying another woman was deeply frowned upon, this turned around for Canadians in July of 2005 when same-sex marriage was legalized in Canada, then ten years later in June of 2015 the U.S legalized same sex marriage in all fifty states. In 2016 there were almost 73,000 same-sex couples living in Canada and 33.4%, or 24,370, of which were married.

Canadians Choosing Not to Get Married

According to a poll from the Angus Reid Institute marriage in Canada is seen more as a ‘social event’ and less and less Canadians, regardless of age, are choosing to not get married. Many Canadians over the age of 65 stated they thought couples should exchange vows, where the majority under 65 expressed that they saw no relevance in marriage. Many Canadians take part in common law relationships where they will pay for bills together, buy a house together, have children or pets together but decide that they do not need to be married, millennials struggle with the costly manner of weddings as well or believe that they will not gain financial stability from marriage so they skip over it altogether.

About 38 percent of all marriages that took place in 2004 will have resulted in divorce by 2035 according to Statistics Canada. The divorce rate was at its peak of 41 per cent in the mid 80’s but had lowered to around 37 percent by the mid 90’s, currently it is estimated that about 40-50 percent of marriages result in divorce in Canada.
