Alpine newts are found throughout Europe, from areas of Denmark to the Balkans. They live mostly in or near water sources that are still or slow-moving, such as lakes, pongs, irrigation canals, and swamps. Some newts can also be terrestrial and live on land and in water.

Amphibians are generally carnivores. The Alpine newt is no exception. They mostly feed on invertebrates, such as gastropods and crustaceans. For this reason, alpine newts control the populations of their prey in the environments in which they inhabit.

Amphibians generally have the following characteristics:
1. A three-chambered heart in the adult form
2. Ectothermic
3. Vertebrates
4. Use waster to reproduce
5. Undergo metamorphosis (some do not)
6. Smooth, moist skin (some do not have this)
7. No claws on toes

Alpine newts have a defined head with slender bodies and a tail. They have smooth, moist skin, like most other amphibians. Most have an orange/yellow underside, and have fingers and toes. They have been known to live on land during the cold winter months, but still do not stray way from a water source. In these months, they lose some of their color and develop a thicker skin. Alpine newts are mostly nocturnal predators and use sight and smell to obtain nutrition.

Alpine newts are present in many protected areas. In many countries, there is legislation in place to protect the areas in which the newts inhabit. Some conservationists have worked to remove certain species of fish that cause problems for the alpine newts.
