A characterization of Tristan Thorne

Tristian is the prototypical hero. He is innocent, unaware of the danger on the other side of the wall and he is sent on a quest by the other stars, whereas he must protect Yvaine. However, his quest and personal goal is also finding the falling star for Victoria, to prove his love for her. He is very naive, which for instance is shown at the time, where he gets a ride from a witch, who turns him into a mouse. He achieves his goals by his bravery and drive, which for example is shown several times in the movie, where he is fightning the witch.

In the beginning of the movie, Tristan does not understand that, love is not something you can buy, and love is unconditional. However, he realizes during his journey with Yvaine, that he loves her and that it is real love. He is also standing up for himself in the end of the movie, because he confronts Victoria about the way she has been treating him, and that she does not deserves his love.

He is also developing from a boy to a man, which is not only seen on his behavior, but also his look. In the beginning he does not care about the consequences of his actions. He tries to run through the wall, and he is dragging Yvaine around unaware of how important she is. He believes everthing the magical creatures tell him, even though they are unreliable. In the end he is more mature and careful, which is shown at the scene where Yvaine is taken hostage by the witches and he is carefully thinking about his next step.

A characterization of the witches

The three witches are the antagonists in the movie The witches developes more and more aggressive through out the plot. They would do anything there stands in their power to stop Tristan and take Yvaines heart out.

Since they are the antagonists they do not really evolve throughout the movie. They do not change their minds about anything, and have the same point of views like they had in the beginning of the movie. The witches outrageous lust for youth is seen several times in the movie, whereas one of the witches kill one of the princes, and later on tries to cut out Yvaines heart. This is also their goal. They kill whoever is standing in their way, and they are willing to sacrifice almost everything for the falling star.

Antagonists like the witches are pretty common for fantasy movies, because they do not really evolve throughout the movie, and they are causing the hero a lot of trouble.

A characterization of Captain Shakespeare

Captain Shakespeare has the typical traits of being the protagonist’s helper. He is helping Tristan and Yvaine when they are trouble. It is for instance seen whenever he lets them stay at his ship in the sky of Stormhold, and travels wherever they need to go.

Captain Shakespeares reputation is important to him, and he seems like being a tough person, but in reality he is actually very sweet. He cares a lot about looking tough to his crew. He loves England, and he has lived there, which is the reason why he is helping Yvaine and Tristan. Captain Shakespeare is not evolving remarkably, but in the end of the movie, he is not pretending to be tough. He is talking to his crew in a nice way, and he realizes they accept him no matter how his reputation is.

The themes and message of the film

The movie want us to learn, that you matter. the fact that somewhere, there is somebody that loves you and cares for your health. Even though It might not seem like it, there is. Tristan for example seems to be ignored by most of the people around him, his crush seems to use him for his money. The theme is clearly a fantasy adventure quest passed story, the movie builds on some quite basic measures used in fantasy, with the protagonist, the villains, the helpers status que and all that.

The message kind of also builds around that you should always keep fighting, keeping your head up during tough times, just like Tristan does.
