Review exponential equations by providing an example, such as 2x = 8, where x is the power to which 2 must be raised to equal 8. Explain that exponential equations such as the example can be solved using mental math. Then point out that exponential equations, such as 5x = 7, often require other methods to solve. Since 51 = 5 and 52 = 25, x must be a number between 1 and 2. One way to solve such equations is to rewrite them as logarithmic equations. The logarithmic equation log5 7 = x is equivalent to the exponential equation 5x = 7, because x is the power of 5 that equals 7. In this example, x ≈ 1.21. 
In this lesson, students are introduced to logarithms, how to evaluate them, and how they relate to exponential expressions. Students will also graph logarithmic functions and analyze their attributes.
