I think It’s like moral and social way of decomposing… that resulted in the pursuit of wealth. I also feel like The valley of ashes also symbolizes an unfortunate way of the poor.

It is described as a plain half way between the West Egg and New York that is bleak and gray. It is made so, because the Ashes from New York City are dumped there, and men who are also described as ash gray work daily shoveling the ashes.

The valley of ashes is not a fantasy world, if anything it looks like a tornado hit and messed up everything. There are men that are described as ash grey and those men are there everyday shoveling up the ashes. These ashes all come from NYC.

Meanwhile people that live in “The Valley of Ashes” are having a hard time as they work in the dirt (ash) just to meet ends. As they struggle just to survive for work. Probably working all day and night, barely having any free time, as if they left work they will be broke with no money or a home. With “The Valley of Ashes” to the rich people, shows us how people’s lives can contrast so far apart.
