Coming from a very religious family, topics such as homosexuality and abortion have always been quite sensitive. I think that mass media plays a major role in America's already polarized politics. There's a side that is very liberal, and one that is far more conservative. However, I don't completely agree with one party and would consider myself a moderate.

Mass media and entertainment corporations such as Disney, Comcast, Fox News, Netflix, etc. are in control of what we watch. They have the final say in what's going to be produced and who is going to be casted. However, to some extent, we choose what we want to watch and are also in control of our opinions. I, personally, don't let the media influence my decisions and overall try to keep an open mind.

I find that appealing and bright colors draw me in. For this very reason, Christmas movies are my all-time favorite. I am also very drawn to music and movies that I don't relate to at all. Maybe it's because it creates a false reality, one in which deep down I would like to experience.

I look at visual culture with a woman's gaze. The fact that I'm a minority has also shaped the way I look at things. I believe each individuals' experiences mold their outlook on life, and that's why everyone perceives it so uniquely. As a minority woman, I feel like I'm very open-minded and sympathetic.

Duncum mentions that all images are related to other cultural texts such as books, poems, and music. I think that this is interesting because a lot of the things we learn can also be linked to a common source. I believe that the shows and movies a person watches and even the books they read, help them form opinions. Many people believe that you are what you watch. For example, watching documentaries on subjects that you are not familiar with, can help you see things from a different point of view and therefore open your mind to change.

I have little to no experience with art, however, music has played a major role for most of my life. Music also seems to play a significant role in the media. In movies, music helps to create the perfect atmosphere and overall just set up the scene. Just by listening to the music, one can tell what type of scene is about to come up, and it can even evoke feelings, enhancing the experience of the film.

Many people seen in movies and TV shows tend to have pretty common characteristics. They are almost all white, cis, skinny, and from an upper middle class. I don't believe this represents me very well, although I am a cisgender woman; I am also a Latina, which is oftentimes not accurately portrayed on TV. When talking about the Latinx community in Hollywood, many people automatically think about Jennifer Lopez and Eva Longoria. This gives such a superficial grasp to the reality of Latinos, and overall doesn't give room to explore the different cultures. Even when, Latinos are cast in movies, very rarely do they end up as a lead role.
