This is my favorite quote in the book for a number of reasons. As the reader reads, they become very attached to Kvothe, the main character. He grows up an orphan in the streets, and only has 2 shirts. He can barely afford to eat. This does not stop him form admitting into the land's most high-end university. When he arrives at the university, he has to take an admittance test to get his yearly tuition. The emotions he describes when he heard that he would be receiving money are so heartwarming, especially since the reader knows everything that he went through. It had been his dream since he was a young boy, and to see him get admitted is truly a great moment.

This is the symbol of failure, which is a very key reason to why Kvothe is an orphan. Lanre, a legendary hero, failed to save his true love Lyra. This drove him into an astounding rage, forming the Chandrian and destroying seven of the eight cities made in the Creation War. He changed his name to Haliax. Kvothe's father was studying the Chandrian, gaining their attention. When Kvothe finds his tribe murdered, it is revealed that the Chandrian were the murderers Haliax spares his life.

Book Review from Booklist

Travelers to the village where Kote runs an inn are rare, but those whove shown up lately have brought bad news. A sort of demonic spider attacks a local, and then Kote rescues a wandering scholar, bringing him to the inn to recover. The man recognizes Kote as the legendary hero Kvothe and begs him to reveal the reality behind all the legends. Most of the novel is Kvothes autobiography, that of a young genius growing up in a troupe of elite traveling players, tutored by an old arcanist, until marauders (mere marauders?) destroyed it, after which he made his way to the great university and petitioned for admission. Rothfuss skillfully handles the change of Kvothes voice from child to youth to student, and the voice of the mature Kvothe in retrospective interjections. Hints of further adventures are strewn about in this series opener, whose one problem lies in its naturally slow, unfortunately sometimes draggy pacing. Not exactly a page-turner, but fanciers of long, intricate plots will be pleased. -- Frieda Murray (Reviewed 04-15-2007) (Booklist, vol 103, number 16, p27)

I do not agree with the final sentences at all. It is a phenomenal book that makes you want to keep reading. It is so full of action, plot twists, sadness and joy that the book flies by and it leaves you sad it ended so soon. To say that it is slow is completely false. In the first one-hundred pages you meet Kvothe's family, see them brutally murdered by the Chandrian, and Kvothe growing up a homless orphan in the city of Tarbean. To say that the book is slow would make me turn over in my grave. He gets banned from the largest library almost as fast as he was admitted into the university. It is very fast paced, and it leaves me wishing for more.

Conflict is a big literary element in the story. As Kvothe grew up poor in Tarbean, he faced many different character vs. charachter conflicts, such as the guard who beat him in the alleyway. He also had many conflicts when he got to university, such as his problems with Hemme. Also, Ambrose giving Kvothe and candle instead of a lamp, getting him permanetly banned from the library. Most oof these conflicts are solved, but some linger on and play key parts later in the book.

This symbol represents going from poor to rich, which was a major part of the book. At first, Kvothe grew up poor in they city of Tarbean, pickpocketing wealthy people to be able to eat. He then got admitted to the University, and got a little bit of money to buy a new shirt and food for the semester. After that, he won his talent pipes by playing his lute, which gave him sponsors and lots of money. This is very key because it all builds up to Kvothe's life as an adult, and all of the pain he went threw to get to were he wanted to be.
