Q2: Why do you think these violations occur?

I think these violations occur because students either want to feel powerful or they want to hide their own insecurities and make themselves feel better by putting others down. Often times, it is said that bullies act the way they do to take attention away from their own problems and project their feelings onto others. Executing this is made even easier when people can do it hiding behind a computer screen, making cyberbullying common and a prevalent part of online communities.

Q1: Which of the Ten Ethical Computing Guidelines do you think students violate most often?

I think students violate Commandment #10 most often. With the strong presence of social media and public websites, it it common to find forms of cyberbullying or disrespectful bashing of opinions. While there are positives to using the Internet and computers, there can often be instances of negative comments and social media posts targeted at other users with the intention of hurting them.

Q3: What do you think could be done to reduce or eliminate such unethical behavior?

This kind of behavior can be reduced by having social media platforms, online forums, and other websites monitor communication between its users to lessen the amount of cyberbullying and other kinds of direspectful or harmful language. Also, the issue of cyberbullying can be stopped at the source by providing adequate mental health resources to those who need it so that they do not project their feelings or problems unto undeserving victims.
