The first stage in development is the trust vs. mistrust bond a child and their caregiver create. This stage is important because it teaches the child that it is okay to trust others. "Baby developed sense of whether world is a good safe place". My mother and I have always had a close bond, anytime she dropped me off somewhere I knew she would always come back to get me, I was never in fear that she had forgotten me.

This second stage creates the child's will power. "Children at this stage are focused on developing a sense of personal control over physical skills and a sense independence" says Erikson. If the child's parents are supportive and encouraging the child will begin to gain independence and have less doubt in themselves. My parents always encouraged me to learn on my own and allowed me to figure things out on my own.

During this period children begin to make up games and play socialize with other kids. They develop the ability to lead others and children also develop guilt during this time. When I was 3 I began to go to daycare and this allowed me to develop socially as well as the ability to read others emotions. "They are learning that some of the things they want to do meet social approval".

This stage in development directly affects the child's self-esteem. During this stage children need to be able to work to achieve the things they want. Growing up I always wanted a dog and my parents told me that I had to complete all my chores and keep my room clean for me to be able to have a dog. It took my parents 3 months of watching me complete chores for them to finally get a dog for me. "If children are unable to obtain the praise of others or lack motivation and self esteem, they may develop a feeling of low self-worth and thus develop a sense of inferiority."

During this stage children begin to learn a sense of self and identity. This molds who they will grow up to be later on in life. "The effort to make sense of the self is part of a healthy process that builds on the achievements of earlier stages." From an early age I have always been creative. I enjoyed coloring, painting, writing with chalk and these things really molded the person I am today. I am still creative and still enjoy doing all of those activities.

During this stage children learn how to love someone that is other than a family member. This happens later on in life around 18 and continues forever. "Person seeks to make commitments to others or may suffer from isolation and self-absorption." I had my first serious relationship at 17 and I learned a a lot from the whole experience.

"Mature adult is concerned with establishing and guiding the nest generation or else feels personal impoverishment." We learn how to be generous and this gives us purpose. I have yet to experience this but, I do want to leave my mark on the next generation. I want my life to actually mean something.

This is the 8th and final stage. This stage is the last stage in a persons life where older people begin to rethink their lives and if they are not satisfied they will begin to feel sadness and despair. I have yet to do this in my 20 years of life but I think I would eventually just have to accept my life for what it was.
