Why?

When waves of light move through a clear material (i.e. a lens), the light waves can change speed/direction, i.e. refraction. This changes the way we see the light.

Think about a magnifying glass; the curved sense bends light outwards to make a picture seem "bigger" than it really is!

Place a pencil in a curved glass bowl filled with water and view it from the side, the pencil appears to "bend beneath the water" - it doesn't really bend; it's just the curved surface of the water acting as a curved lens!

In this experiment, the water in the straw has a curved surface, because it lies inside the straw (i.e. a plastic cylinder).

This "cylinder" full of water creates a cylindrical lens, which turns the image on the page upside-down when we look through!

We can now see the letters the right way up and decode the secret message.
