Over break, I watched the movie "Hidden Figures". This movie is about the first 3 black women to work for NASA as engineers during the 60's. During this time, men, especially white men, were in charge/led just about everything. This true story of the women who helped NASA is so important because we see all of the things they were told they cannot do and all the racial and gender barriers placed upon them that they had to break through.

Last semester for another class, we had to read/watch "The Hate U Give" by Angie Thomas. Throughout the entirety of the book/movie, the main characters go through struggles related to racism on a daily basis. This book/movie is incredibly powerful and I would recommend it to anyone.

On Netflix, I am watching a show called "All American". It is about a poor football player who is recruited to play high school football in Beverly Hills, CA, where he lives with his wealthy, upper class coach and his family. Throughout the show, the main character, who is one of the only black students in a predominately white school, is constantly faced with mistreatment and racism because of his skin color. I really enjoy this show Because I know a lot of people my age watch it, and they talk about really important topics and issues throughout the show. This article explains more about the show and how it present these ideas to viewers.

During the coup at the U.S capital, this tweet was on my timeline. It is a picture of a Trump supporter (I'm assuming) sitting in the chair of our government officials. If the people who did this were POC or BLM protestors, not only would they have not made it through the doors, but they would all be dead. During BLM protests, officers were armed with tear gas and rubber bullets, and were not afraid to use them, even on children. This photo shows the disgusting truth that is our society, and the events that occurred on this day made it crystal clear.

Derek Chauvin Trial

Over the past 6 days, I have been watching parts of the Derek Chauvin Trial. While watching the officers body cam and street cameras during the trial, there were many examples of America's social justice issues. For example, after the cops arrived, within 15 seconds one officer pulled a gun on George Floyd and his friend who was in the passenger seat, who were both visibly unarmed. Another example is after Chauvin had his knee on George Floyd's neck, even after he had passed out and was not longer moving. There were several points of evidence given in this trial, and I think it is something all Americans should watch, because this trial puts our problems in the spotlight.

I found this post on instagram by an account who gives tips for teachers. I chose this image because not only are standardized tests effecting students, but teachers as well. How do you measure the intelligence of a student when every student is different?

"White Lives Matter" KKK Rally

While reading the news, I came across this article. This week, Orange County, CA residents have been receiving and seeing KKK flyers for a "white lives matter" protest. Though it is horrifying and disgusting, it is a great reminder that our society is still so far behind and has so much to change. It's important to highlight awful events such as this to prove to those who don't believe this is a serious problem and that there is still an important fight to fight. America will never be united if we are hidden from horrors such as these, and don't attempt to make a real change. Also, this is supposedly happening this weekend, and I am eager to see how the police will respond. In the article, it was mentioned that police do not support this, but cannot do anything because of the 1st amendment.

Sigh. I follow chang.org on instagram, who regularly posts heart wrenching facts and statistics like this. This was posted on April 18, 2021 only 3 days ago, and since then, there have been more lives taken from the police, including a 16-year-old child. To add, in 2020, there were only 18 days out of the year that police didn't kill someone. The police are supposed to be seen as helpers and protectors, but today they are seen as a threat, and I hope facts like these change the minds of those who think what is happening is okay.

I came across this post from someone who added it to their instagram story. as future teachers, and as current students, we will most likely, at some point, be faced with challenges outside of school that effect our daily lives in school. The person who originally tweeted this to shout out the Minneapolis Public school district. In most cases, students would have been punished for missing classes (i.e. school walkouts for March for Our Lives), but here, in the city where George Floyd was murdered, students are allowed, and even encouraged to make their voices heard. If more districts follow this example, schools would begin to change for the better.

Childs Hair Cut by Teacher and Peer

I found this article through Facebook. My initial reaction was shock and disgust, as no student, and especially no teacher should be cutting the hair of a student. In the article, Jimmy Hoffmeyer explains that his 7-year-old daughter, Jurnee, had her hair cit on two separate occasions. The first occasion was on the bus, when another student cut the hair on one side of Jurnee's head, and the second time being only two days later, by Jurnee's teacher, who attempted to cut (without permission) the other side of her hair to even it out. After going to the superintendent, who offered the next to nothing offer of Jurnee's teacher sending home an apology letter, the superintendent said she didn't have the power to do much in this situation. As a future teacher, I cannot even imagine what made anyone involved in this incident think their actions were justified.
