Guided reading is a way to help children work at an individual level with a goal that will lead to independent reading. To reach this goal, teachers scaffold texts based on readers within groups as well as offer multiple strategies to students to help them read more accurately and fluently. These groups are very fluid and are based upon each child individually. Teachers observe and assess students within these groups to differentiate among students as needed.Through this process, students gain skills such as self-monitoring and problem solving so they can reach the goal of reading independently and be able understand the text.

Guided reading is a gradual process in which teachers provide minimal support on the road to independent reading. It is a socially supported activity that involves observing reading behaviors, developing reading strategies, reading for meaning, problem-solving, ongoing assessment, and ultimately developing the abilities needed for independent reading. It is the teacher's job to make decisions based on their knowledge of the students, the available texts, and reading processes. These decisions are imperative to the success of students learning to implement independent reading strategies.

Guided Reading is a teaching tool which helps students develop the skills to eventually read independently. It consists of a group of students who are on similar reading levels. They work together to unpack vocabulary, read a story, unpack details of the story, and then make connections about what they read to other texts, themselves, or the world around them. All of this is done with the support of a teacher.

Fountas and Pinnell say it best when they state that "Guided reading is a teaching approach designed to help individual students learn how to process a variety of increasingly challenging texts with understanding and fluency." However, guided reading is more than just this definition. It is a way to help students make connections to other texts as well as the world around them. It is a way incorporate cross-curricular content into each aspect of the day. It is a way to scaffold learning such as Vygotsky suggests with his Zone of Proximal Development. Overall, it is a way to bridge the gap between learning to read and reading to learn and this is the goal for all elementary students as well as all learners, regardless of age.

It starts with making connections and relationships with each student that you have in a group. You become even more familiar with them over the course of your working together. Readers are grouped together based on skill level. Texts chosen are ones that the students can be successful reading, but also with some challenge that will further help them to develop their skills.
