1. The School Counselor and Group Counseling
I chose this reference to the course learning because it was placed frequently in most of the weeks throughout the course and is highly important to keep in mind while facilitating groups. This describes the importance of group settings, as well as describes the role of the professional school counselor when leading different groups with students. Being in groups helps student with academic, career and social/emotional development with others.
Reference

American School Counselor Association. (2014). The school counselor and group counseling. Retrieved from https://www.schoolcounselor.org/asca/media/asca/PositionStatements/PS_Group-Counseling.pdf

2. School Based Group Counseling
Chapter 6 "Groups for Elementary School Students."

I chose this reference because it targets the elementary age group. This chapter is full of different interventions, and information for the school counselor to manage and run an elementary group. The chapter urges the counselor to have more of a laid back plan and not always expect the session to go as imagined due to the different students participating. This chapter goes over desired leadership skills needed as well as making sure to be mindful of different cultures when running the groups. This chapter also incorporates examples of teacher slips, and parent consent forms needed to have students participate.
Reference
Sink, C. A., Edwards, C., & Eppler, C. For this activity, I dress up as a detective by bringing in various props, such as a magnifying glass or a Sherlock Holmes-style hat. I talk about how I look for the good in all students. To help students recognize the good in themselves, we become detectives and look for these talents, positive actions, etc. Students use the clue cards to document one of their positive characteristics. Younger students can draw a picture and have an adult (teacher, counselor) scribe their answers. You can have students guess who belongs to each clue or have students present their clues.

Reference

SG Self-Esteem. (n.d.).

For this lesson, you show a clip from the move "a Bugs Life" , then ask the students to reflect on how Flik, the main character, is feeling. Then, connect that to high or low self-esteem. Next, compare Flik's actions to Dot's, a young ant with a big personality. Students are assigned a character (Flik or Dot), then draw and write about a time they felt like that ant.
The second lesson is a review. You begin discussing how our actions can positively or negatively affect someone else's self-esteem. We practice the positive side by writing one positive thing about every person at our table. This is done one-by-one in a circular motion, facilitated by the counselor.

For the second, This is called "cupcake"and is an adorable book about a plain vanilla cupcake that isn't picked to eat. Cupcake decides that he must find a way to make himself more exciting, but ends up making a friend in the process. Students can learn about self-esteem through Cupcake, having to list things that they like about themselves. There is a worksheet that comes along with it of a cupcake. Also, you can bring in plain white cupcakes for students to snack on!

Reference
Self-Esteem. (n.d.).

SELF-ESTEEM WORKSHEETS FOR STUDENTS IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

This website offers seven different worksheets for kids in elementary school that are in group counseling for self-esteem. The worksheets help elementary-age students begin to identify some of their positive strengths. Also, they will assist the student to figure out how their uniqueness is something for them to be proud of. For example there is a worksheet about what makes a good friend and how to be a good friend as well as a template for students to begin to journal about their positive outlook on life.

CONFIDENT COUNSELORS

This blog offers numerous resources contributed by school psychologists, school counselors and well as social workers on a weekly basis. I chose to focus on the article titled “10 Quick and Easy Group Counseling Activities.” All of the activities provide an easy option for a school counselor when they need an activity for one of their group sessions. For example one of the session is titled, “Group Counseling Basketball.” It is an activity that not only requires the involvement of the student but the school counselor as well. Each student in the group counseling group will take a turn shooting at a basket will a ball provided by the school counselor. If they miss the basket they are asked to answer a question that has to do with the counseling session. However, if they make the basket they get to decide what the school counselor has to do, like a dance or particular action chosen by the student.

I chose this picture because it shows the message you are what you think you are. In this case being self-esteem, the students will learn from this affirmation that if they think they are good, happy, or beautiful etc., then these words truly describe them, rather than letting their circumstances or what someone else says affect them. The importance of the positive thoughts that they have about themselves can show and be who they truly are.

I chose this photo because it shows what is self-esteem, as well as how we can improve self-esteem. It uses many different colors and positive faces that I believe would catch the elementary students’ attention and lead them to wanting to know more and learn more about their own self-esteem.

This would allow them to brainstorm and enhance their own self-esteem by sharing their own thoughts, positive affirmations, qualities about themselves, and many other journaling topics that would help to boost their self-esteem.

This photo shows both a guy with low self-esteem and the other with high self-esteem. It points out the ways in which they are different from one another. For instance, sharing their thoughts about others and themselves. This would allow students to identify which side they are on, or which side would they most like to identify with.

This photo defines the different “self-esteem” masks and can be very beneficial to both the counselor and the student. Looking at the title of the masks and their descriptions, could help the counselor to identify these behaviors, as with the students this will allow them to see where they are with their own masks.

Super Self Group

This group session will assist the students in becoming their Super Self by allowing them to engage in activities that will help them to identify their strengths and positive qualities.

The Super Self Group incorporates self-esteem and esteem-building activities. During the sessions the group uses different worksheets, crafts, and activities to enhance each child’s self-concept. The group will help the children to identify their strengths and positive qualities, as well as encourage healthy social skills and communication. The group will meet once per week during the school day for approximately 30 minutes, and will run for a six-week session.
https://www.gorockets.org/Downloads/ElementaryGroup%20Descriptions2.pdf

Self-Esteem Quilt

This session is a great exercise and learning activity that would allow elementary students to become engaged and enjoy themselves while learning about self-esteem.

The self-esteem quilt is made up of two parts: HIGH self-esteem and LOW self-esteem. The session begins with a story (i.e. Loretta Ace Pinky Scout) that highlights the differences between the two.

After a group discussion, the students draw what high self-esteem looks like at school and what low self-esteem looks like at school. The students and counselor then discuss key words that go along with these pictures and add those to their quilt.

The purpose of this lesson is to help students recognize how both high and low self-esteem impact the school environment and therefore, the level of student success.

http://www.elementaryschoolcounseling.org/self-esteem.html
