Building relationships with students and with your colleagues is crucial in creating a well functioning system. how does quality learning happen? We first need to establish relationships structured with respect, understanding, adaptability, and trust. Our classrooms are filled with students who often come from different backgrounds and cultures. Good things happen when a student truly feels accepted and welcomed. For example, when students see that you are trying to understand who they are and their values as a person, they feel cared for and see purpose and will start to take pride in their academic performance. In this situation, teachers also gain from it and become more confident and teaching becomes easier when students are willing to perform. When connections are made, emotions are stabilized. There is a strong benefit in the connection between emotion and learning, therefore it is crucial that programs exist where all of us can develop capabilities to establish improved learning environments, identify trauma, increase motivation, and encourage self-efficacy.

Implementing SEL in your classroom doesn't have to be a daunting task. It is important to understand that we serve as a model to our students and much of their development and behavior comes from watching what we do. It is important to be aware of your own social-emotional well-being, actions, biases, etc. Look into SEL curriculum and incorporate a small amount every day that focuses on topics such as self-regulation, communication, teamwork, decision making, and impulse control, etc.

but efforts presented in this discussion align with CASEL because the ultimate goal in any schoolwide SEL process includes the methods to help organize, implement, and improve SEL at your school. The content available here gives examples of how we can develop as professionals to improve on our own social-emotional skills to then foster the development of our student's social, emotional, and academic skills through the implementation of various SEL strategies. To conclude the discussion, CASEL recommends an approach where you start with Focus Area 1 to build a strong foundation. Then your school can engage in activities to both strengthen adult SEL (Focus Area 2) and promote SEL for students (Focus Area 3). Every step of implementation is guided by a process of continuous improvement (Focus Area 4). In each focus area, you’ll also have an opportunity to track your school’s progress through the Schoolwide SEL Implementation Rubric.
