A Long Way Gone is the story of Ishmael Beah through the rages of the Sierra Leone Civil War. Ishmael initially tries to find shelter after witnessing the annihilation of his village. He is taken in by one of the government military bases, which he feels safe in. The problem is that they have other plans for him. Ishmael is then requited to fight in the war against the rebellion, even though he is only twelve. High of a mixture of cocaine and smokeless gunpowder, Ishmael goes on to preform unspeakable acts in order to stay alive in the war, in which he fought in for over three years. He was later put into a rehabilitation program, where then re-learns his innocents and his kind heartedness again.

He continued: 'Every time people come at us with the intention of killing us, I close my eyes and wait for death. Even though I am still alive, I feel like each time I accept death, part of me dies. Very soon I will completely die and all that will be left is my empty body walking with you. It will be quieter than I am.'"
