The wild rumpus is a celebration between the monsters when they celebrate a new king. "Let the wild rumpus began"!! This shows when Max reveals his leadership towards the monsters they are happy and starts to celebrate because they are happy he is their leader. The wild rumpus could have started from their last leader, and maybe they are happy Max showed up and took control over the island. The animals are wild so that probably why they call it a wild rumpus. (Jeremiah)

Sendak establishes the magical child as the mom for Max as she saves him from his wild feelings. In the picture, Max returns and gives up being kind with the smell of food enticing him. As Max goes through his imagination meeting the monsters, what brings him back is the food cooked by his mom. The food representing the mom's love for him is what helps him bring his wild feelings into control. Ultimately, it is the combination of mom's love and his self-control that saves him from the "Wild things."

Sendak utilizes the food and the emotions expressed by both the mom and Max to show that the mom ultimately is there for him in the end. When Max was being wild his mom yelled, "WILD THING!" which shows the lack of emotional control between the mom and Max. Max and his mom both utilize their feelings for each other to keep each other in control. Everybody experiences their wild feelings and although it may feel weird there will be a person to bring you back.

After being sent to bed without any food, Max's room begins to become a forest. The forest kept on growing and growing until there was an ocean. Max decided to "[sail] off" and winds up on a random island. Before getting sent upstairs, his mother called him a "WILD THING", so when he landed he proved himself as the king of all wild things. Max is easily distracted by his desires and finds it difficult to snap back to reality. Him leaving his mother was due to lack of focus in the real world, which is why his mother had to snap him back to reality with bringing him his food.

What is the magic? What wisdom or wickedness does the magic represent? (David)

The magic is represented by Sendrak's utilization of imagery through Max's mind and emotions. In the illustration, as he reaches the wild things each monster represents an emotion or challenge he has to overcome. When Max is sent up to his room a forest starts growing which can be interpreted as succumbing to his emotions. His "wild rumpus" goes on as he dances around with each monster, representing him feeling each emotion. The magic is an illusion Max uses to fulfill his desires as he grows as a child. But in the end, Sendrak shows Max growing as a character as he controls himself leaving the monsters as they want to eat him up.

The wickedness the magic represents is the lack of control of one's desire. As Max is growing up he is learning to express himself and in the beginning, he shows the lack of control, eventually being sent to his room. But as the story goes on Max says, "No" to when the monsters told him to stay with them. This shows Max's self-control and his development as a child. Expresses his needs with his loved one, Mom, and puts aside his desires.

At the start of the story, Sendak allows Max to make "mischeif" in his wolf suit and build a fort because it allows Max to enter his fantasy filled world; he is able to let his desire to be untammed come alive The whole time Max keeps the wolf suit on, he is misbehaving. Max is a young boy with a vivid imagination, and he wants to be able to feel free but also in control. That is what leads him to leave his house and seek a proto-world. To let go of his responsibilities of being King of the Wild Things, Max is shown slipping off his wolf costume. Sendak emphasizes to the reader that when Max wears his wolf suit, he is at his wildest, most unhinged self.

Who is the helpless central character? Are there multiple? How could we see this through multiple perspectives? (David)

The helpless central character is Max. Sendak within the book shows Max's lack of self control as he is battling himself and his mom's expectations. In the picture we can see Max expressing his wild side, but his mom sends him to his room for being too wild. This shows Max is helpless without his mom's control and even then he lacks self control. Sendak utilizes the monsters as Max being helpless as he succumbs to his emotions and desires.

There are not multiple helpless central characters but there are different perspectives. Max can also be seen as the enemy or the Other within the book. Because there are two sides to Max, the one with desires and the one that wants to listen and be loved. In the end after all the rumpus Max "wanted to be where someone loved him best of all" as he becomes tired of controlling the monsters. He sympathizes with his mother experiencing his wildness and coming to a realization that he needs to control himself. Although Max may be seen as the central character Sendak utilizes his character to represent something deeper.

What is the significance of the "still hot" dinner left for Max at the end of the story? (Jeremiah)

The significance of the "still hot" dinner, is that Max had some warm soup and chicken waiting for him. Maybe the significance of the dinner is that no matter how long you are gone from home, you home will always be waiting for you and someone caring for you like your mother. Which explains why Max's dinner was still hot waiting for him. Maybe his mom was waiting for him to return home and made sure his dinner was still warm. Max's mother was waiting for him the whole time and made sure he still had a hot dinner waiting for him, Max's mother was just being a good mom and letting Max explore with his imagination, and right after made sure his dinner was nice and warm waiting for him.

While on the island, Max was really enjoying his time with the monsters. They were something Max felt he was able to relate to. After Max got tired of being the king of wild things, he "smelled good things to eat" and decided to leave the island and return home. Max's mother was able to bring him back to reality by providing him food. The food, in this scenario, plays the role of a helpless central character by helping the magic child stable and composed. If it weren't for the food, Max would have stayed on that island forever and remained the king of all wild things.

The magical child in this story is Max because he uses a magic trick to become the King of the Wild Things. Right after the Wild Things "rolled their eyes and showed their terrible claws" Max commands them to "Be Still!" and proceeds to tame them with a magic trick of "staring into all their yellow eyes without blinking once". This action possessed the Wild Things to become fearful of Max, leading him to become King. Max is different from other children or characters in the story because he has the ability to grasp power over the most powerful creatures on the island that he sailed to. He is "marked" because he also has the capability to sail away and go right back to his bedroom when he pleases. Max enables his supernatural ability to own the Wild Things and thoroughly enjoy his time with them.

Explain the concept of the Other as it relates to this text. How are Others identified? (Savannah)

The "Other" in Where the Wild Things Are is easily depicted as the monsters. Maurice Sendak completely changes the way of children's literature by revealing Max's true emotions of frustration, anger, and other complicated feelings that are shown through the monsters. The monsters represent Max's inner identity because when Max becomes their King, he sends them all to bed without dinner, just as his mom did to him. Max posseses great vulnerability and is considered "special" because he had the ability to become King of the Wild Things. In addition, the monsters just want to have a good time and participate in the "Wild Rumpus" with Max. However, Max realizes that the monsters are not what he needs; therefore, he must finally return home where he belongs.

How does the rule of three operate in the story? What is its significance? (Jordan)

In a proto-world, the rule of three is meant to help emphasize an idea throughout the book or story. In this story, Sendak uses this rule to help emphasize what the monsters really are. They, in his imagination, are the emotions and desires of himself. The first thing Max did when landing on the island was taming the beasts, which made him "the king of all wild things". After being crowned king, he "'let the wild rumpus start". Max and all the wild things began to just let loose to all their wildness and uncontrollable desires. They were all just having fun playing and swinging through the forest without a care in the world. The significance in this story showed that Max just needed to escape to a place where he can let his imagination run wild before returning home to sit down and eat with his mother.

The archetypal task for the short story "Where are the wild things" is Max exploring his imagination and basically nothing that's happening is real, but Max thinks it is because he is still very young and he is using his imagination. So the archetypal of the story is imagination something Max goes through as we read the story. Yo can also argue even if they sometimes want to be wild things, a home with loving discipline is the best place to be.
