The “Hang Time” was made on May 9 , 2022 by Françoise Mouly but the art was by Kadir Nelson. In the picture, it was inspired by the New York basketball fans. It was experiencing lost hopes. Award-winning artist Kadir Nelson celebrates New York City basketball with a towering reverse double-handed slam dunker easily rising above city skyscrapers.

NYC basketball supporters have experienced the pain of dashed hopes over a second every year in the past. The NBA's Brooklyn Nets are "a theoretical super-team, not a fully realized force," has journalist The author Cunningham, among them. It lost against the Boston Celtics during the opening round of the NBA finals but the games continue around the city's numerous fields. They chatted with Kadir Nelson regarding honoring a popular city pastime. The NBA's Boston Celtic defeated the Nets of New York in "a sweep that even the worst Nets pessimist wouldn't have predicted," sending the club home during the championships during their initial round.

Workers journalist Vinson Cunningham described the London Nets as "a theoretical super-team, not a fully realized force." But the competition continues regarding the several courts across town. Kadir Nelson's artistic talent shines in "Hang Time." His illustrations perfectly complement the narrative, creating a rich and immersive experience. The visuals are both breathtaking and emotionally resonant, bringing the characters and basketball court to life.

In "Hang Time," Kadir Nelson showcases his remarkable talent for seamlessly weaving impactful messages with breathtaking illustrations. Through his storytelling, he not only inspires young readers to chase after their aspirations but also emphasizes the significance of perseverance and strength when confronted with obstacles. "Hang Time" serves as a powerful testament to the everlasting influence of exquisitely crafted children's literature, where the fusion of words and art creates an indelible and remarkable journey for readers.

13th Film Commentary

Ava DuVernay was the director of this very historical Netflix documentary titled “13th.” This documentary talks about the thirteenth amendment in America and that is “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction." This documentary has a deep explanation about the thirteenth amendment and the history behind it. It goes on for over an hour long about the different topics relating to the amendment like slavery, crime rates, racism, unjustification, mass incarceration and much more. We can also see animations in the documentary as well as music that talks about the topic being spoken about.

Racism and slavery were the first topics mentioned in the documentary. They showed old pictures of slaves in the fields, being treated as prisoners. There were films being shown in the movie as a starting point to the topic. One being titled “The Birth Of a Nation.” This brief explanation of the movie talks about how white women would rather die than be raped by a black man which shows how black people were seen and treated in the early motion picture era. Rapists and criminals.

The footage in the movie was very old as it was not the best quality like movies we have in our modern times and not only was that the only detail that appeared, but there was also no sound. Early motion pictures were known to use text when trying to show when a character was speaking or when portraying a sound effect. They also used this opportunity to have the speakers in the show voiceover the scenes being shown in the movie as they are being played. Then, the scenes proceeded to very explicitly disturbing pictures of the black community being publicly executed for doing just the littlest and most innocent things any human being could do. This shows how different white and black people were treated.

Simple animations were used often to help the audience visualize the situation the speakers in this documentary are talking about. For instance, the visualization of black people moving to different cities across the US because they were terrified of being murdered and publicly executed. We had Martin Luther King Jr, Angela Davis, along with many US presidents like Reagan, Nixon, Clinton, Trump etc. All of them were handling the racism and crime rate in the US and what the documentary uses to prove to the audience that this event really happened is by taking all the old footage related to the topics being spoken about and putting them together to create and build a connection between a story or topic to another. There was even old recorded news to help the audience recall or just as more proof to the audience that these very events occured in the past and are still happening in the US as time flies.

Politics were clearly and obviously spoken about in this documentary and they were very much involved in every topic of the film. There may be joyful, prideful moments throughout the whole documentary but the documentary concluded its talk about the thirteenth amendment as a sort of awareness to the audience that this was happening then and it is happening now.

Steam

"Steam" is a poem by Carol Ann Duffy, part of her 1993 collection "Mean Time". The poem explores themes of time and memory, using the image of steam to symbolize the evanescence of the past. Duffy's work is known for its themes of love, loss, and the human condition, often drawing on personal experiences and observations. In "Steam," the poet reflects on the complexities of human experience and the passage of time, making the personal universal.

Duffy's poetry often employs vivid imagery and metaphor to convey complex emotions and experiences. In "Steam," the poet uses the image of steam to represent the transient nature of time and memory. The steam, a substance known for its ability to fill and empty spaces, serves as a symbol for the way memories can both be evoked and lost over time. The poem's use of imagery and metaphor allows the reader to connect with the emotions and experiences conveyed in the poem, making the abstract concept of time and memory more tangible and relatable.

"Steam" explores themes of time, memory, and the human condition. The poem suggests that time is not fixed but rather malleable and subject to change. The poet's use of vivid imagery and metaphor underscores the idea that memories can be both evoked and lost over time, reflecting the transient nature of human experience and the passage of time. The poem also implies that the act of remembering and reliving memories can help to keep them alive, even as they may fade over time.

Carol Ann Duffy's work often draws on personal experiences and observations, making her poetry deeply rooted in the cultural and historical context in which it was written. Although "Steam" does not explicitly reference specific historical events or cultural phenomena, the poem's exploration of time, memory, and the human condition resonates with the experiences of many people throughout history. The poem's universal themes and imagery allow readers to connect with the poem's message and find relevance in their own lives.

Carol Ann Duffy's poetry, including "Steam," has been widely celebrated and studied in various educational settings. Her work has been praised for its ability to convey complex emotions and experiences through vivid imagery and metaphor. The poem "Steam" has been particularly well-received, as it offers a unique perspective on the passage of time and the nature of memory. The poem's exploration of these themes has made it a popular choice for analysis in English lessons and other educational settings, providing students with a rich opportunity to engage with the poem's message and develop their understanding of poetic technique.

The structure of Carol Ann Duffy's poem "Steam" is free verse, which means it does not follow a specific rhyme scheme or metrical pattern. The poem is divided into three stanzas of varying lengths, with the first and third stanzas consisting of four lines each, and the second stanza consisting of six lines. This irregular structure mirrors the theme of the poem, which is the evanescence of time and memory. The lack of a regular structure reflects the fluidity and transience of the subject matter, allowing the poet to convey a sense of impermanence and change. Additionally, the enjambment, or the continuation of a sentence from one line to the next without a pause, creates a sense of flow and movement, further reinforcing the theme of steam and evanescence.

1. The natural and the social seem to be played against one another here to some extent. How is the natural treated at the start and at the conclusion of the poem?

It was natural and social elements were combined in A.K. Ramanujan's poem "Death and the Good Citizen," without the natural functioning as an alternative to the social. The natural is introduced in the poem as an uncontrollable, unpredictable force, whereas the social is introduced as a construct that is flexible. At the poem's end, the speaker considers the temporariness of human creations and the certainty of death, eventually showing the natural as the impact that ultimately prevails over the social.

2. Quite literally, what are the three social "citizens" presented here?

The speaker, the poet, and the reader are the three societal "citizens" that the poem presents. The poet is the one who wrote the poetry, the reader is the one who is reading it and considering its meaning, and the speaker is a person who has had a happy life and is now facing death.

3. Ramanujan's poem has a very narrative quality; what are your thoughts or feelings as to why Ramanujan decided to utilize poetry to express his viewpoint because it offers a more in-depth and particular examination of concepts and subjects. Poetry is a perfect vehicle for conveying the poet's thoughts and feelings since it can effectively transmit complicated emotions and ideas via the use of language, imagery, and structure.

4. What is the single line that strikes you in the most impactful way? Explore what about this line moves you ( for example, ease of understanding, sound, image, metaphor )

The sentence that most impacts me is "And the body's waste matter should be collected as 'night soil' and used to fertilize the orange trees in a municipal garden." This particular sentence is unique because it emphasizes the poet's appreciation of the simple splendor of ordinary existence, as well as the annual aspect of life and the interdependence of all things.
