I also read the passage multiple times in order to get a more in-depth understanding. If I still do not understand the word, I look for the main theme of the passage/paragraph, and try to deduce what it means from there. Also, I can apply what I know about prefixes, suffixes and affixes to better understand the word. If all this fails, it is better to just skip the word(if it does not look essential) or just make an intelligent guess.
