According to Masten, resiliency is best defined as, "the capacity of a dynamic system to adapt successfully to disturbance that threaten system function, viability, or development" (Masten, 2014, p. 6).

Additionally, Masten and Obradović expand on this definition by saying that resiliency consists of "concepts related to positive patterns of adaptation in the context of adversity" (Masten & Obradović, 2006).

For teachers and counselors, aiding in a child's resiliency is an important aspect of the job. Masten says that, "Teachers, school counselors, and other staff function directly as promotive and protective factors in the lives of high-risk children while also nurturing the learning skills, knowledge, self-regulation skills, and self-protective skills that children need to adapt on their own" (Masten, Herbers, Cutuli, Lafavor, 2008).
