The soil was perfect for farming and it suited the plantation style of life.
Weather: Very warm climate with very hot humid summers and winters with mild weather.

The original religion of some of the first settlers is Catholicism.  For the most part religion did not matter because of how spread out everyone was the closest person to you was miles away so no widespread persecution could occur.
Economy: The southern economy was based upon farming and slave and indentured labor. The things most valuable thing sold are tobacco, rice, and in later years slave trade.
