The Freedom Riders, who were recruited by the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), a U.S civil rights group, departed from Washington, D.C., and attempted to integrate facilities at bus terminals along the way into the Deep South.

  • May 17, 1961: The riders arrived in New Orleans, Louisiana to celebrate the anniversary of the Brown V. Board decision. 
  • May 18, 1971: they arrived in SC, one man was arrested.
  • May 19, 1971: Arrived in Atlanta, Georgia and received speech from MLK Jr.
  • May 20, 1971: one bus of riders were fire bombed by a mob(Alabama). Second bus of riders arrived and were attacked by angry people(Birmingham). Marked the turning point!!

    Boynton vs Virginia case (1960), overturned a judgment convicting an African American law student for trespassing by being in a restaurant in a bus terminal which was "whites only". They impacted American society by spreading the idea.
