We think that Mrs. White see's Ada as a girl who should be locked away. And because of the historical timeline she viewed Ada as someone who doesn't belong in normal society, and that's why she looked at her in disgust.

-In the story it also says "I'm surprised to see you out with ordinary people." That's different from today because people don't judge people by there disabilities.

-Mrs. White thought that Ada was a simple minded, because that's what Mam told everybody because Mam was ashamed of Ada having a clubfoot. Then when Mrs. White saw Ada's whole body she realized that Ada had a clubfoot. Another reason why Mrs. White reacted the way she did is because when Mrs. White saw her through the window she only saw her head and chest and not her clubfoot.

-Another reason why Mam told everyone that Ada was simple minded was because that was the standard of the time.

This makes us think the time periods affects how people treated disabled people.

We think that when Ada made the decision to learn to walk because she wants to feel valuable to her mom and others. For example in chapter 2, it says " Maybe Mam would smile at me. Maybe she'd say, Aren't you clever then." Also the book said " Up. Grab the chair. Steady myself. Step forward. Fall down. Up. Try again." This shows that Ada is persevering to walk so Mam could appreciate her.

In the text Ada's mom is a single mom and looked as disabled which makes her feel unvalued and ashamed. The fact that Ada has a clubfoot makes her feel more ashamed of herself. Mam takes it all out on Ada and Ada just wants her moms approval. This shows the timeline affects the way Ada's mam treats Ada.

Ada hopes that when she can walk, Mam wouldn't keep her locked in her room anymore and Mam will maybe like her better. Maybe she thinks this because Mam would realize that she can hide her foot. And perhaps she would treat Ada the same way she does to Jamie. One example of this is when Ada thinks, "If I could walk, maybe Mam wouldn't be so ashamed of me. Maybe we could disguise my crippled foot." This shows that Ada still has the determination of Mam to like her just as he does Jamie. I wonder how Ada would feel if Mam actually started being nice to her after she learned to walk. There is also a possibility that Mam would get angrier and possibly hate her more.

During that time period, They thought disabled people should be in asylum Mrs. White says, "I thought they'd put you in an asylum." One example is when Mrs. White looks Ada up and down because she has never seen her in person. This shows that Mrs. White thought that she is simple minded. Another example is how Ada is on crutches because she can't walk. "I'm not simple," I said, "I've got a bad foot, that's all." This shows that Mrs. White made an assumption about Ada which was wrong.

For example, Ada wanted to run away from Mam so even with her bad foot hurting she was able to run away with Jamie. Another example is she feels freedom while riding butter even though she has a bad foot. Another possible is that finding where you belong is always worth the fight. For example Ada is trying to find where she belongs so she can finally be appreciated by people. Also Butter is helping her on the journey. These are some possible themes

An example of this is when Ada escapes mam and walks to the train station. This shows that Ada was in so much pain that she needed to escape mam. When Ada is having a hard time Ada thinks of butter as freedom.

Our theme is gaining trust. Gaining trust can make a big difference in a relationship. For example, when you throw a tantrum you almost trust that person to let out all your feelings. But Ada would never throw a tantrum with Mam around, because she did not or never did gain trust with Mam. But she did throw a tantrum with Susan, and this shows she is starting to gain trust with her. Another example is in the text it states "I felt very odd to have her touch me. Of course it made me tense, but I didn't go away inside my head." Usually Ada goes inside her head in a awkward situation but not this time. This is another reason why Ada is starting to gain trust with Susan.

Our group thinks that one possible theme is "Life can be bad, and life can be worse, but never give up, because it can also get better."
We think this is the theme because Ada has a really terrible life, getting abused by her mother, but then it gets even worse, when her brother, Jamie started leaving her for his friends but then it gets better when Susan starts taking care of her and Jamie.
This also applies for Susan, Life is pretty bad when Becky dies, and it gets worse when she is forced to take care of Ada and Jamie, but then she grows to love them, and then her life ends up getting better.

human interaction is key to not feeling lonely and feeling like you have a meaning in life. This theme is relevant for Susan because when Becky died she felt like she had no meaning in life. However when Jamie and Ada came to live with Susan she felt like she had a meaning in life because she had to take care of them. The theme is relevant for Jamie because when he lived with Susan he lost all of his friends and felt like he had no meaning in life. However later in the story he makes a close connection with Susan and that makes him feel like he has a meaning in life because he feels loved. This theme is relevant for Ada because when she was living with Mam she got abused and when Jamie started spending time with his new friends and leaving Ada home alone she felt lonely and felt like she had no meaning in life. Until she met Butter and felt a deep connection with him and felt like she had a meaning in life because butter symbolizes freedom to Ada.

We think the theme everyone has hard things in there life, you just have to find a way to push through. For example, Ada has a clubfoot. She gets crutches and that helps her. She also goes back to butter when ever she is upset because it helps her calm down. Another example is how Ms. Smith is having trouble adjusting to Becky's death, she relies on Ada and Jamie to help her push through

The main idea is that Ada is trying to find were she belongs. For example when Ada tried to learn to walk so Mam would treat her like others. One other example is when she had put on Mams shoes to go to the train station to go to the country and when some one asked what happened to Ada's foot she said that a brewers cart ran over it, she also had said that a brewers cart ran over her foot when people asked in the country. We think this is because she is trying to find a place where she fits in.

human interaction is key to not feeling lonely and feeling like you have a meaning in life. For example when Ada through a tantrum on christmas eve it was because she felt like she didn't belong and wasn't worthy for all the love she's getting from Susan. Another example is on page 174 Susan says, "That's not what i'm trying to tell you that I'm glad you're".

Suzan is slowly gaining Ada's trust by being patient with her. For instance, when Ada starts to go on the couch with Suzan and Jamie she starts to let Suzan comfort her. And usually she doesn't let anyone com close to her or even touch her. She didn't go inside of her head like she usually does. This shows she is gaining trust with Suzan, because Suzan is patient. It even says on page
