For one, It does not make sense for his dad to leave PAX behind because he had a dog when he was a boy.Maybe Peter's dad lost his dog and he might not want peter to lose PAX and have a feeling that he might have had.I think Peter's dad  never told peter that he had a dog because I think that Peter's dad's dog died.
