This quartet was very influential to me during early childhood. The main character, Alanna, is a complex character who decides to fight for what she believes in rather than hide from the challenge of being an individual. Each book demonstrates Alanna overcoming adversity, whether it is supernatural or realistic.

The Lost Years of Merlin Saga by T.A. Barron

T.A. Barron's Merlin Saga introduced me to the idea of fantasy as well as history. These novels were fiction, however they included many historically accurate descriptions of places and people. The young Merlin was tasked with learning magic, something he struggled to control until he had learned persistence and courage.

Each character is complex and complicated... Perhaps something even more interesting, each character has relatable qualities and they are animals!

A world where cities eat each other!? Airships and steam ships and adventure, oh my!
This book introduced me to the steam punk/post-apocalyptic genre of literature that I had never seen before. The characters in the novel encounter challenges that require them to use strategic thinking as well as bravery in order to solve difficult problems.

This novel came into my life during college and has stayed with me ever since. Offred is an excellent example of a dynamic character: she changes throughout the story, reacting to challenges and ordeals that (at first) appear beyond her control. Offred is the leader of her own destiny and shows her strength throughout later section of the novel.

Interview with a Vampire by Anne Rice

Anne Rice introduced me to the goth horror genre - and what a welcome read it was! Her story involves vampires, humans, internal conflict and the constant threat of monotony. Louis (the books main character) is overcome with distaste for his life as a vampire, so he decides to follow his own path and navigate the city of New Orleans himself.

Fantasy, intrigue, dragons, epic battles, folklore, and new worlds... What more could I want? A Game of Thrones has a plethora of characters that are in constant battle: with themselves as well as others. Most are fighting for what (they believe) is right - faced with supreme odds that are oftentimes supernatural in nature.
